He can’t let go and admit reality.
He will still see himself as ‘big dog’, ’king of the world’, the great leader who single-handedly got the nation and its grateful people through the pandemic, and bestowed upon us the great gift that is brexit.
He is the magnificent stag being brought down by the baying herd, the hero who will yet come riding in on his charger to save us all from his totally incapable replacement.
If you put all this in the context of him being a pathological narcissist,
then you can see how it works for him.

He never used the word "resign" - he said stepping down or stepping aside and in that speech he questioned the wisdom of the Tory Party ditching him - he thinks he can still come back triumphant and lead them to victory - Trump like in the extreme
