And so it begins...

Those goals from the beast all look fantastic, but how many times did he score us crucial goals in the premier league when we were up against the wall and needed him? He scored against the dippers but he did his best to blow that.
I think the beast is expendable and would snap a buyers hand off if they offered north of 20 million. When push came to shove at the crucial time of the season it was Dzeko who stood up to be counted. For me, Negredo is fourth choice striker. It is really worth having a 20 million pound asset who is approaching 30 being sat on the bench when he is unhappy at the club (allegedly)?
To go 2-1 up against Arsenal:

To go 2-1 up against Liverpool, ultimately the winner:

The only goal against Hull:

Not in the league but the opening goal, in extra time, against Newcastle. A tournament we would go on to win..:

Again, not in the league but to go 3-2 up, ultimately the winning goal in a 4-2 win, against Plzen:

Yes I appreciate these goals. I am not saying he did not make an important contribution to our season. But the only one of them that was a defining goal really was the Liverpool one. Even that one he fluffed and if Mignolet had not produced an absolute howler we may have been talking about the Negredo sitter that ultimately cost us the league.

Like I said, I am happy for him to stay. He is capable of outstanding moments and we do need a player who is going to score the 3rd, 4th and 5th goals. But as other posters have said, IF a Barkley (sp?) or Walcott was to suddenly become available then Negredo for me would be the one to make way.

Personally I think that once we sign Mangala then that is our business complete for this season. I would be ecstatic at that as we would have a well balanced squad that does not really have any weaknesses.

edit- I forgot about the Hull goal.

So the only goal against Hull, that obviously won the game, was not "defining"?

The winning goal against Newcastle in ET, in a tournament we went on to win was not "defining"?

The man scored 23 goals in his first season in a new team/league. Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do with that tough first season under his belt.

See my edit on the post fella. Did Dzeko not score a 2nd in the Newcastle game?
Again that is beside the point as I give Negredo full credit for the important part he played last season. But when push came to shove at the business end of the season, when Sergio was out injured, it was Dzeko he pulled us through.

I am happy for Negredo to stay and hope he does well. But imo he is the most expendable if the squad could be improved long term.

I don't think the Negredo thing has an easy answer. We probably need to play him to find out if 1st half or 2nd half Negredo is the real Negredo. Of course we should make a deal at the right price to insure ourselves against the downside of this answer, but the Negredo of the 1st half of the season is as good as you can hope for from a striker.

One thing that's interesting about all those GIFs is that he was on the move in all of them, making clever runs. We think of him as the beast, but it was more his movement that created those goals than anything else. I feel like he was more static the 2nd half of the season, but maybe some of the movement just didn't produce the outcomes.

He did, but isn't the opening goal in a "to nil" win, the winner?

Never mind the fact opening the scoring is the harder feat..

He contributed quite a bit when our "backs were against the wall" for a player in his first season at the club is my point, we didn't just compete in the league last season so it's rather unfair of you to water it down to that, even then he scored a good few important goals.

He may well have been injured in the 2nd half of the season and we do not know what issues he had in his personal life. Because of that then maybe it is preferable to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Has he not always been inconsistent in Spain though? One minute coming up with something sublime and then next going on the missing list. Maybe we just have to expect that from him and if he scores 20 goals next season then we have to be happy with his contribution.
In realiy it has to be Jovetic who really ups his game next season anyway. Another season from the beast like last would be satisfactory.

It's all about pieces of the puzzle. Midway through the season we were foaming over Aguero and Negredo and their combination. We were thinking Dzeko might leave because of poor form and lack of game time. Jovetic was injured and the jury was out. Then Negredo has an injury and failed to recover form or fitness, Dzeko stepped up, Aguero was injured and Jovetic was regularly in and out of the side without contributing much.

We won two trophies last season and despite the many injuries we had you have to give credit to the squad we had for still getting the side through. Negredo was a key part of that. He came to a new country and entered a side adjusting to a new system and new manager and he really settled in incredibly well. He was prolific in Europe where we have been pretty much consistently poor. We never had a goal scorer in Europe who would regularly find the net but Negredo scored 5 in 6 and really took his chances.

Unless that offer comes in for him that is too good to turn down, you can't let him go. The club won't. We are in a strong position this summer whereby we know the players we want to sign and will sign them. We also probably know the players who we may entertain offers on and who we would replace them with.

Good post and sums up my feelings really even though it looks like I am being a touch hash on Negredo.
