OK, I know I put it in the Rag thread, but it deserves to be in here as well (from the Sunday Mirror back page):

Angel di Maria agrees to join Manchester United in £60m deal - after City said no

The Citizens were put off by Real Madrid's high demands, but United weren't and will complete a British record deal for the winger

Angel di Maria will join Manchester United in a British record transfer - after rivals Manchester City turned down the chance to sign him.

Sunday Mirror Sport can reveal that United will pay Real Madrid £60million for the Argentina winger.

And they have also agreed to stump up another £7m in add-ons.

The deal will shatter the current British record of £50m paid by Chelsea to Liverpool in January 2011 for Fernando Torres.

United manager Louis van Gaal put Di Maria at the top of his wish list when he name-checked the 26-year-old in an interview with Sunday Mirror Sport earlier this month.

He is the big-name signing that United fans have craved. But they will be devastated to hear that Di Maria's advisers contacted City after the Would Cup to gauge their interest.

The winger wanted to link up at the Etihad with international team-mates Pablo Zabaleta and Sergio Aguero.

But City said they weren't interested.

A senior City source confirmed: "We were approached about the possibility of signing Di Maria. he made it clear he wanted to come here. The deal offered was €75million with another €10m in add-ons. But we were not interested in making it happen.

United, desperate to deliver a stellar name for Van Gaal, haven't been put off.

Woodward was locked in talks with Madrid after the price was set by the European champions.

Di maria has told friends in Spain that he has accepted a £180,000-a-week offer from the Reds.

And he has made it clear he wants the number 7 shirt at Old Trafford.

Di Maria could cost Manchester United £150m

The Old Trafford club have made a breakthrough in their pursuit of the Real Madrid winger, with negotiations set to continue on Sunday

By Paul Clennam

Manchester United may have to spend a staggering £150 million to wrap up a deal for Real Madrid forward Angel Di Maria.

Goal understands United have edged closer to the signing of the Argentina international, who is keen to link up with Louis van Gaal.

And the Old Trafford club are facing a significant outlay if they are to secure the signature of the 26-year-old winger.

Madrid are aiming to receive somewhere in the region of £70m and £75m for Di Maria, though the initial fee paid by United could be lower with bonuses and add-ons supplementing the deal.

Di Maria, meanwhile, could pocket a £5m signing-on fee and sign a five-year contract worth close to the £300,000-a-week wage earned by Wayne Rooney.

United have secured just three signings this summer, bringing in Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao for around £29m, left-back Luke Shaw in a deal which could rise to £31m, and £16m Argentina defender Marcos Rojo.

After a disappointing transfer window so far, the pressure is on Old Trafford executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to complete a move for Di Maria.

Indeed, Woodward is understood to be desperate to seal the signing of the winger, who has been a target for United over several weeks.

Di Maria has moved ever closer to a Madrid exit as the start of the new season in Spain has approached.

The winger was not in the squad for the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup defeat to rivals Atletico, and Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed the player has said his goodbyes ahead of his departure.
"Di Maria didn't train train [on Sunday], he came just to say goodbye," Ancelotti told reporters. "It is not official, but everything is solved. We thanked him for what he has given the club and we wished him good luck.

"Personally, I have had very good relationship with Di Maria. He has done a fantastic job at Real Madrid. We are able to replace him very well. It was his decision, because the club did everything possible, offering everything they could to have him here. He decided otherwise, so good luck to him."

Negotiations to complete the deal are set to continue on Sunday.

I seem to remember some rags giving out about the price of James Rodriguez on twitter, something about it being bullshit Real Madrid could spend £63m on one player under FFP....

£75m transfer fee, £5m signing on fee for the player with close to £300k a week wages?

Absolutely ridiculous, can you imagine the slating we would get if we did such a deal?

But it's United and it's OK for clubs like them...

and that's without mentioning Jorge Mendes's agents fee...

'......who is keen to link up with Louis van Gaal.'

There may be a sea change in opinions now. With the same kind of stuff being said about a few of their targets, it appears that players are now saying they want to work with van Gaal than are saying 'it's a dream for me to be linked with Manchester United', or 'to be linked with one of the world's biggest football teams is flattering' etc, etc.

Which is precisely why FFP was brought in. To protect the existing rich from the nouveau riche. Imagine how much they would have had to pay if ourselves and/or PSG had been all over this bloke as well? F*cking corrupt, and f*cking transparently corrupt at that.
You can see the attitude of these clubs in the way Barcelona have dealt with their transfer ban. "You can't do this to us, we're Barcelona". Followed by endless appeals.
The sooner this cartel at the top of European football is smashed, the better. Bloody sight harder now with FFP, though.
Shower of shit.
