Spent last new year in Istanbul. Wonderful place with fantastic, friendly people. There was the small issue of the nightclub while I was there tho....

Saw a documentary on BBc2 I think about Turkey. Usually you don't learn much with these things but it opened my eyes to a good few things that aren't usually covered. What really surprised me was the infrastructure they have built for Syrian refugees - about 250,000 of them if I remember correctly. All in large, clean, safe camps with good sanitation, food aid, electricity. Really in total contrast to what has occurred in Europe. Whilst some of this is undoubtedly political in nature (Erdogan believes many Syrians will remain in Turkey and ultimately vote for him), they have spent billions on ensuring that they are well cared for. The other thing that struck me was the level of investment in Istanbul. Mind blowing. Was a well made programme and gave me good insight into modern Turkey.

Simon Reeve on bbc2 sunday pm 2nd part is on next week. Was a brilliant documentary that like you said highlighted a lot of the unseen. If Erdogan stays secular it could be a really prosperous country.

Its economy is already healthier than many EU members. The guy gets a bad press which may or may not be warranted but you can't argue about his contribution to improving the lives of the majority of Turkish population in terms of workers rights, healthcare, education and the infrastructure of the country.
