Slightly off topic I know but I found the History of the Bradford Pit

I did not realise that it only closed as recently as 1968! And one of the reasons was the amount of damage the workings were doing to parts of the City, I have heard that there is still plenty of coal under the streets of Manchester still, albeit a little difficult to extract
Texas tea is in charge in Manchester now,Black Gold,oh Lord,Sheikh Mansour.

cheers for the pit link,i did a lot of contracting in that area when it was awash with games money.i was told the mine was over the Etihad not over asda, but i guess it could have covered both. The industrial revolution the power and glory that fueled an Empire came from that area....Joseph Whitworths steel works were there,a stones throw from the Etihad.
Engineer, inventor, candidate for greatest ever Mancunian, they still make components for jet engines on part of his old works. some of his sheds are still there, blacked out to stop jerry bombing them in the war.His train tracks are still buried in ashton road, and i have one of his shovels i rescued from a forge they were breaking up to scrap.the handle of it when you hold it ,its all worn away, you can feel fingers and a thumb in the wood from a hundred years of stoking the forge it was lay next to.

i call it ...the Empire shovel...

Have a chat with Alex Channon from the supporters club (who is on here as BlueAlex??) he was a miner at Bradford Colliery.

I too thought the pit was above the stadium, but looking at that map on the link given, look at where Grey Mere Lane meets Ashton New Road.... the colliery is to the right, not straight ahead or slightly to the left which is where the stadium is. Also see where lock number 6 is at the canal. That is now on Alun Turing Way - the colliery is to the right of the lock, where Asda is now.

The Wiki entries for Beswick and Bradford both claim that our stadium and asda are in their area.

I was born and raised in Bradford , Manchester .. and most , if not all , of the stadium now stands in land we , in the 1960's , always classed as being Bradford .... and also close to , if not on , the old 'Bradford Pit' site , which bordered Ashton New Road ...... mine tunnels still run deep beneath the stadium.

However it's quite possible that , as Sportscity is quite a large site , that parts of it do straddle the Beswick boundary.

As for it being pronounced Bes-ick , instead of Beswick ... that's just the way it is .... same with the name Dionne Warwick (pronounced War-ick) , and the London borough of Chiswick (pronounced Chis-ick ).

Hi All,
I use to work at the Kwik save in Beswick and was just trying to find anyone else on this forum who use to work there.

My email address is dieharder@hotmail.com
Name; Steve Wykes (one of the supervisors who use to wear that bright red cloak).

If anyone knows anyone who use to work there can you pass on my email or search Facebook under my name (Now living in New Zealand).
Many thanks
Steve

Because when a W comes after a S it is usually silent, but after a D it isn't.

Why did everyone when I was young used to say Rush- em but now everyone says Rush-home?

Yeah... but Glodwick in Oldham is pronounced gloddick

-- Fri Mar 21, 2014 12:58 pm --

Same with 'Apperay. Now it's Harper-Hay!
You mean Arpoh-ray, shirley? Mustard mitt, I'm from South Manchester originally and when I first said Collyhurst (as it's spelt) I was swiftly corrected Colly-ust.

The locals can pronounce it however they want... I've made my choice.
