below is the paragraph from the Ofsted Inspection Handbook on the obligations schools have to teach / promote “British Values” (must admit, I can never get my head around how these differ from your average Spanish, French, German etc values):

  • acceptance of and engagement with the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. They will develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain

I might ask if the Handbook could be updated and a rather nifty asterisk be inserted to denote the right any government has to allow the liberal use of “notwithstanding”.

What times we live in.

Any form of human government will be imperfect.

What we have to do is reduce the imperfections, not enhance them. The other problem is when you talk about 'fairness' or 'justice' (for example) - these things are abstracts. What I mean by 'fair' might not be what you think.

But politicians juggle with these abstract terms in an attempt to appeal to the common desire that is in all of us for 'fairness' and 'justice.'

FWIW, I think 'democracy' is an abstract too. It depends on what you mean by 'democracy'. East Germany used to call itself the German Democratic Republic. (Or the German version thereof, but you know what I mean.)

This all day long. The ONLY thing the Tory party actually gives a shit about is, The Tory Party.
From the repeal of the corn laws to the Brexit referendum and now to vilifying various groups in a desperate attempt to make people ’look over there’ whilst they’re trying to hang on to power by any and all means possible, taking away rights that everyone thought were inalienable. It’s interesting that many of their media champions have suddenly realised that these policies will start affecting them, which wasn’t supposed to happen..

They’ve broken the working class and they’re now gunning for the middle class.
Many of the middle class Tory voters, didn't really care if foriners were coming in and doing low paid jobs, but if they’ve got to be earning £38k plus, they'll be coming for their jobs next and that realisation will slowly start to dawn, you’d imagine.

People can’t put food on the table, heat their homes, clothe their kids, fill the car up along with a myriad of other things they used to take for granted and all they’re doing is pouring money and seemingly all government time into a ‘Rwanda plan’ that most people don’t give a bollox about!

You are not a daft old woman, your eloquent post shows that in spades

Far right governments work on " othering" people who are different to the norm they expect.
They chip away at all state provision because ideologically they are against statist intervention.

A revolution is coming

Theoretical in the sense we will never have everyone being given an equal opportunity, or even an opportunity at all in some cases, but we do offer greater opportunities for (example) women then we did thirty or forty years ago and I think that’s true across the board. People still fight these changes or lament the passing of the days when roles and stereotypes were more rigid, but when you give people opportunities they tend to embrace them.

Our education system still stratifies sections of society - political and media class is still dominated by the privately educated and we are conditioned to think this is okay, although one school providing half of our Prime Ministers is absurd and illogical by any metric.

I would also introduce a Universal Income. It will happen at some point - currently 54% of the UK population are on some form of benefits and that figure is only going one way, so, might as well do it properly.

Anyway, I’ve started to ramble so I’ll end it there.
