Arsenal FA Cup SF Post-Match Thread

am puzzled why pep has not singed somebody else upfront (striker) we are lacking somebody getting 30 goals if aguero gets his normal injury he picks up every season ? pep at barca had a dodgy defence but had goals in the team to get him out of jail ? this season city have score goals but leaked goals and many silly goals in games we should have won easy but we missed so many chances

Because who wants to come here and sit behind Aguero or and Gabby, I dare say when Aguero leaves we will easily find a new striker.

Another pertinent question would be why can't the academy produce one? They all seem to be wingers or AM's no real out and out striker.

I think I would move Gabby to the left and give him the freedom to use his dribbling skills and be more creative and at the same time look to see if Braaf is good enough this next season to be in the mix for rotation or league cup games, Sterling and Mahrez on the right, Aguero and a new out and out poacher taking the centre forward role. I would jump in and grab Haaland myself before Real or Barca snap him up.

It has been obvious all season that we really miss the leadership and quality that Vincent offered us. He had injuries aplenty but was a massive presence in the dressing room You cannot go and find another VK easily, but it left a huge whole in our back four and with Laporte"s long term injury made the idea of not buying a CH last summer unfathomable

No plan b. Pointless pinging high balls into the box, as they said wheres a dzeko when u need one. They were all poor, no excuses, got what we deserved. Defence overhaul required, don't want to single anyone out, you defend as a unit, however some of it was Manchester amateur stuff!

We surrender so meekly in the FA Cup:
Arsenalx2, Wigan.

Compare that to the fire and brimstone when we go out in the CL: Monaco, Liberpool, Spurs

I just don't think the manager and the players are really arsed about the cup. They can't seem to get themselves up for it.

its not that is it ?
its when you know your a better team and have so many chances and the other team goes up field and scores and you lose ? you think how the fuck did we lose or why did we lose, this city team on its day can win every game they play ? but this city can also play and look like we are never going to score with the same players (this is manchester city)

Klopp’s only sane quote was that only City can beat City

We got what we deserved, nothing!
What game were you watching? We dominated, missed a few very good chances...how many times were they in our box in the 2nd half? You seem to have watched some game where Arsenal pummelled us for much of the game and spent most of the game in our half.

Ok your opinion, I thought we were shocking!

Our players are considerable better than theirs in every department, our players did not turn up yesterday and neither did Pep.

Very disappointing day yesterday, it’s uncanny how many days we’ve had this season that we play ok or well, but we just have the look of a team that just isn’t going to score. Once the opposition score it just seems to make us tense up at the moment.

I know Pep is very loyal to his senior players and has a hierarchy in place but I would really like to see him break out of this a bit more.

There is NO point in us having the ability to make 5 substitutions from a selection of 9 players when, in my opinion, we only had TWO players that I would want to come on in the situation we were in yesterday - Foden and Bernardo. They were the only two attacking options we had. Why not have a Braff or a young striker (Delap) on the bench as cover for a ‘bad day at the office.’

Hopefully we dust ourselves off and manage to find a groove for the CL.

We have so much defensive cover but not many are the solution we need at the moment.
Why there isn't another attacking option on the bench like you say a Delap or Braaf is just baffling. I'd say there's no chance of us seeing either in these last two league games which would be a crying shame.

He loved Lewandowski so not too sure I agree on the Dzeko point tbh.
Whilst I liked Dzeko and his stats were great he was never the footballer Lewandowski was. Whilst both goal scorers and 'big' men one of them had a significantly better all round game, which Dzeko lacked.

My wife said it was the most disappointing semi she has seen for a long time , I said we’ve been married for over two centuries , I’m almost 50 and just seen my team papped out of the FA cup...
Lol, if you have been married for two centuries mate, you are lucky to be getting to the semi stage( unless of course you are count dracula). In which case I claim my £5.

Klopp’s only sane quote was that only City can beat City

its true

we are 2 teams in one ? and the system pep likes is punishing and we can be wide open at the back if we don't score early doors, but if we are on our game nobody can touch us and the goals come, but this season city have been not been consistent enough and them 10 to 15 game unbeaten runs have not really happened ? THE INJURY TO LAPORTE can not be used when you see the chances we missed in games and the strikers need to have a look at themselves

I can’t remember those very good chances we wasted. Some half chances like Mahrez shot and Silva’s one past the post, but we didn’t really
Create a great deal compared to what we normally do.

Probably becausw player's we bought just haven't worked out, mainly Stones, Cancelo and Mendy. All three looked great additions but for various reasons they just haven't worked. The money we spunked on them could have bought the rock of a centre back we desperately need. Add to that Dinho' getting old and Rodri not a patch on him and we.are where we are.

Yep. Our buying hasn’t been great recently.

I think Mahrez is a great individual player but I’m still not sure he fits in to our side and has the required work ethic (all of the players seem to be lacking intensity this season though so not just him - I remember watching Sane lose the ball and track back 50 yards to win it back in the 100 point season. Sterling too. We just don’t seem to have that desire any more.)

Cancelo was a strange signing and hasn’t worked. Rodri looks too slow to me and the lack of DM cover ( whoever has played there) has been part of the defensive problem)

We need to buy very well this summer whatever that costs and we need to move players on who have had their chance.

It will Probably take two summers to do it though and the defence must be the priority.

the golden rule as a striker is to play with your back to the goal jesus can not do that because he is not a striker ? you can see in his game that its running at the defence from out wide with the goal infront of him ? city's only have one striker aguero and he had to change his game to play in this pep team and learnt to play both ways ?? but its clear to me that a out and out striker would score a shit load of goals in this setup

He had Messi, Iniesta and Xavi

its not the system you have to have that killer instinct in front of goal as well, ok spanish football is not as good but chances are taken more by the likes of messi and ronadlo and they get 50 goals a season to help the team sloppy defending

It was shite, no doubt about it. Apathetic and lethargic as well as far as I'm concerned. I was expecting something completely different after the Bournemouth game. The only positive was 35000 blues hadn't forked out an arm and a leg to witness it.

While I totally understand and share many of the frustrations and disappointments this season especially on the back of liverpool seemingly going unchallenged to the league title I felt i would rather come at this from a different angle. Maybe its the perspective that this year has given me on the back of the pandemic and what's gone on around the world but I don't think this team is in need of this huge overhaul that many seem to be suggesting neither do I think the likes of mahrez, gundogan, jesus are either not good enough or past it. with the first two particularly being 29, they've certainly got a couple more good seasons at the top level ahead of them and will still have a huge role to play.

But to get the bigger point though, this is a group of players whom for the most part have performed to a level way beyond anything previously seen for the past couple of seasons. With a level of consistency, intensity and concentration required that is almost unparalleled in this league. 198 points in 2 seasons is no mean feat and this is without the luxury of only being focused on one trophy as a result of being knocked out early or not being in a title race so their standards had to remain ridiculously high for a good part of it while challenging for all possible trophies. The centurion season will always go down in history and as has been shown this season reaching that record wont be easy. Ederson's addition was a revelation and completely transformed the way the team played, Otamendi played like the player that won defender of the year for valencia that season and was imperious, Walker was the perfect rb for the high defensive line and the perfect cover for any sort of counter, delph slotted into that lb role and did exactly what was needed from him and that's before getting into the forward side of fern, silva, de bruyne, sane, sterling and aguero who all seemed to be playing as one. This was a team that was playing football not seen in the league prior and pretty much blew all other teams away.

But as incredible as they and that season was, I'd argue last season was the even more impressive feat. In fact its imo guradiolas most impressive season since his first one at barca. Make no mistake that liverpool team that year is one of the best sides the prem has ever seen at least in a single season and I feel were even better than this current one. They also seemed to have everything going their way that season with some of the worst goalkeeping blunders you'll see in the last seconds of games. Everything looked to be pointing to it being the year for them. This was all on top of a city team that had de bruyne missing for pretty much the whole of the season, sane running out of favour for the second half of it, fernandinho missing crucial games due to injuries during that same period, d.silva not being anywhere near what he was the season prior, and mahrez not yet being the signing everyone thought he'd be. For that 14 game winning run to the title where each game was a must win high-pressure one, a team consisting a defence with zinchencko at lb and gundogan sitting in front managed to concede just 4 goals in that period. That was the catalyst for which they managed to win 5 of those 14 games by a single goal. And while they were always still the dominant team in those games, there was an added steel and determination that was unheard of during that run when you consider how close of a race it was. Barring a last minute var decision I have no doubt they would've added the champions league to the 3 domestic ones.

So on the back of 2 seasons like that where 5 of the possible 6 domestic trophies had been won(excluding charity shield) with record number of points tallied and a closely fought season where it was won on the last day and the 2nd placed team finished with 97, a sort of drop off would naturally be expected especially if there aren't enough reinforcements and unfortunately that turned out to be the case. When you lose such a big figure like Kompany after the season he just had, it leaves a big hole in the team. Not buying a replacement for him was without doubt the biggest mistake the board/manager made going into the season and I'm guessing it was on the belief that fernandinho could slot in and do a job there while rodri in turn takes his role but that clearly proved to not be the case. Add in the injury of laporte for the whole season and you are left with a team that's pretty much lost the catalyst that drove them to the league title in its final stretch the season prior. It was an uphill battle from then on and despite a lot of claims of the team being not clinical enough I believe that has mainly been the crux of their problem this season. On the other end you have players like sterling who have played damn near every minute and was only bettered by ederson and walker on minutes played for the previous two seasons of such intensity and to add to that no one else has played more than him this current one its no wonder you get a stretch of games where he seemed totally out of it. In fact is a miracle he's even managed to still rack up close to 30 goals this season. That shows not just how good he is or has been but also how important he's been to the club this previous 2 seasons.

I will come to my final point as this post has gotten a bit lengthy but to summarise although it has been a disappointing season so far (champions league win could change that) and I share many of the frustrations especially with the lack of a quality replacement for Kompany going into the season. I am more looking at it in the context of what the team has achieved the previous 2 seasons and how much of a toll that may have taken on some of the key players(sterling, walker), the natural likelihood of a drop off after winning 5 of 6 domestic trophies with 198 points in the league at such a high intensity coupled with injuries to very important players and not replacing kompany, I can somewhat understand why the season have gone the way it has this season when all those are taken into account. Going forward it's clear the main areas needed for reinforcement are a top quality center back which should be main priority, a very good lb, and another attacker/striker. Though unlikely a window with koulibaly, alaba and sancho would be the ideal scenario and imo would be more than enough to take the team back to the previous standards as I still believe the likes of mahrez, gundogan and jesus still have plenty to give and with foden and garcia coming through it should be enough in the squad to compete on all fronts.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results!

That's what 10 losses with just more and more crosses into the box when we don't have any tall players like Edin Dzeko, Mario Balotelli anymore or hell like Klopp has Origi.

Hell even Mourinho had the common sense to get Fellaini in the team when games where it wasn't going his way.

We need some serious back up strikers who are good at heading balls into the net when we are not winning the Tiki-Taka way!
Lol

We played that poorly vs Southampton, vs Manchester United, vs Wolves. This is not a 1 off.

If we don't get goals in the tiki taka way we tend to lob balls in non stop looking for someone to head them in but we don't have Edin Dzeko, Balotelli anymore.
we don't play tiki taka
