Manchester City appear to be winning their fight to hang on to Alvaro Negredo after Atletico Madrid switched targets to Mario Mandzukic.
Atletico want Negredo to replace Diego Costa and are said to be willing to pay up to £24million to lure him back to his homeland after just one season with City.
Negredo is believed to be interested in a move to Madrid and he endured a lean end to last season when he was injured and lost his place.
However Manuel Pellegrini sees Negredo as an integral part of his attack and the former Sevilla hitman bagged 23 goals before his drought in front of goal.
He wants to keep him as City challenge again on four fronts last season and the Blues do not want to sell the Spaniard.
This message appears to be getting through to Atletico and they are eyeing up Mandzukic as an alternative.
Mandzukic's first-team prospects at Bayern have been hit by Robert Lewandowski's arrival and Thomas Muller signing a new deal to commit his future to the German champions.
City's focus is on incomings rather than outgoings and they are edging closer to a £30million deal for Roma's Mehdi Benatia.
City have lost interest in top target Eliaquim Mangala because he is lukewarm about joining them and have been talking to Roma about Benatia.
Roma are interested in City centre-half Matija Nastasic, but the Blues do not want to include him as a makeweight in any deal.
