Unfortunately none of them were eligible for Balon D'or, same with Maradona and several great South American players. It was only Europeans eligible until 1995 and then France Football opened it to soccer players from all nationalities playing in Europe in 1995. In 2010, they merged the award with the FIFA Best Player award started in 1991.

The European (UEFA) player of the year used to be Balon D’or (Charlton, Best, Keegan etc all won)… Erling won it this year (European Footballer of the Year). So we can class him alongside those previous winners.

You can say that again...cruyff taking Brazil to pieces in '74 coupled with his teamates scoring regular from 40 yards takes some topping ( the argies reps had to break in his gaff and put a gun to his head to ensure that level of performance wasnt repeated in dont cry for me '78).

Yes, a mark of how good winners Brazil were in that WC was the quality of the other teams. Italy, West Germany and England in particular. England and W Germany were both felt by many to be stronger than in 1966 whilst beaten finalists Italy were most certainly much better than 4 years previously. You're right about Joe - his regular mispronounciations were TV gold :-).
