Messi has been poor by his standards this season despite the WC. It has to be Kev or Haaland if we win the treble. He has won enough.

Messi was the only player in Europe with 20+ goals and 20+ assists - that’s absolutely insane for his age. In reality he’s putting in some of the best ever performances of a player aged 35+. We talk about his standards, but the standards of the past are now unattainable simply because he doesn’t have the legs to go on the runs he once did. Unfortunately he still gets judged based on what he was doing when he was of a younger age.

Haaland could score 10 in the final and the award would still go to Messi.
These ‘popularity’ awards are just so predictable.
I read an article about the voters before, and lots of them from other parts of the world simply didn't know anyone apart from Ronaldo and Messi. Even international captains had limited knowledge of anyone beyond the superstar names.

Obviously Haaland is getting there, but he's got 31m Instagram followers, compared to around 500m for the big two, so is still a long way off.

The whole thing is completely pathetic. It's like the vote for Best Film at the Oscars, only most of the people voting have only seen 2 or 3 of the films.

Absolutely.

And in totally contradictory manner, I do think Messi should get it this year. World Cup winning captain, and as someone pointed out, his numbers this year are still impressive. On WhoScored, he's still the top rated player in the Champions League and in Europe's top five leagues this season, and while stats aren't foolproof, they're not biased towards fame.
