Bayern post match thread

Thought we did well last night but yaya and Nasri need to step up quick, both shocking again.

After that ref performance I have no doubt we have been had over from people above(plattini blatter and co)that's 3 blatant pens we should have had against Munich at in the last 3 visits and got fuck all, Coruppt to the max. Time to just concentrate on the prem forget the CL because there's no chance we will be allowed to progress.

Without a serious improvement in personnel, and their use, we are never going to make it in Europe.

In addition, Pelle needs to get a fucking clue! I know 4-4-2 is his preferred set up, but he is fooling no-one by playing Silva in a slightly withdrawn role.

Tonight should have been about who was going to win the midfield battle and who was going to dominate possession. We lost both battles and the number of chances created and shots on goals demands attention.

4-5-1 is the ONLY formation to play away from home against your primary CL group opponent, unless you have an inflated sense of what you are bringing to the game. In addition, of those 5 across the middle, at least 3 of them have to be ball winners who can pass.

Tonight was a game for Navas-Fernandinho-Yaya-Silva-Milner. Nasri is not now and never will be the player to put in the midfield when we are looking to play Mano a Mano across the middle of the park. With that midfield, we would have had two-three players who could break forward in support, in addition to the overlapping wingers.

Even with all the great saves Joe made tonight, we still had a handful of chances to win the game. One of the best was in the first half when Navas broke forward and Dzeko was alone in the middle and Navas could not get it past Boateng. Another was the dead cert penalty, and Sergio's last minute chance, which could have gone in with a left foot instead of the outside of his right.

Well, it wouldn't be City if we didn't make it hard on ourselves, but now, with Roma's demolition of CSKA, we are in a battle. Matching results with Roma is now going to require getting something in Rome and scoring plenty of goals along the way. Makes the next game a huge "must win"!!
An excellent post Chicago Blue. You hit the nail on the head about Silva's position last night and our need to play 5 in the midfield.

Roma would lose home and away to Bayern, We would also defeat them home and away .

A lot of emotive and typical knee jerk reaction to a loss e.g. it's a corrupt system, poor tactics or substitutions, lack of penalty being awarded et al.

That game could have gone either way last night and I am proud of watching my team play in Europe, against the best teams that this competition provides.

We should remind ourselves that our rise in stature hasn't come gradually, but in relative quick order. We are close to being good enough in Europe, but I would suggest not quite there yet.

Some great individual performances last night, and on another night, we may have won.

I know a forum is a place to air your thoughts and let of steam, but lets have some perspective of where we came from, what we have achieved and what we are likely to go on to achieve.

We acknowledged when we were shit, which makes us much classier supporters than others playing not too far away. Lets not turn into those kind of fans who constantly knock their teams when they don't come away with 3 points, particularly from one of Europes leading lights.

Now, on to Sunday.

Again, just don't agree. If the best you've got is some vague reference to some utterly subjective notion of inferiority I'll leave you to it. Overall I'm arsed about the result. Finishing first or second in the group doesn't really matter. I like the idea of playing the big boys home and away. In the round of 16. Lose. Out. Win. Through. No one can say "yeah but you only played FC Nobody".

Like I say, can't remember the last time we lost and i felt like this.

God knows how you can draw a positive from that dross tonight. Yes, we were only 3 mins from a point but we were shocking, imo, against a side that on paper I thought we should be beating. We were second best for the majority of the game and there were worrting signs from players like Nasri, Yaya and Sagna.

Not good, imo.

Dross?

Sleep on it. Watch it again. Desaily for example said post match in his analysis "50/50 match. Simple. Bayern got the break."

I agree with him and well, he isn't Jamie Rednapp.

Yeah Sagna and Nasri weren't great but I'm not about to argue the toss over the team performance.

Having slept on it, I don't agree.

There were glimpses of good football from us and some decent performances, notably Fernandino, Hart and Navas. But we were disappointing for large parts of the game and on balance they deserved their win. Yes we should have had a pen from the foul on Silva, but they might have got one for the arm on Robben.

They created far more chances, looked far more dangerous, had way more attempts on goal and had Hart not been on his game, we would have lost heavily.

Take the blue specs off for a moment. Imagine the roles were reversed and we were at home and played like Bayern did, and they were the visitors and played like we did. If we drew that game, we'd have felt we were robbed.

Our tactics were far from great. If it was good than sparky is a master tactician as with a very limited squad he made us suffer at Etihad while Begovic nowhere near had to make as many big saves than Hart yesterday and on top of that they had more of a goal threat than us yesterday.

We went for a 0-0 basically and were lucky lose on 1-0 and it wasnt down our huge tactics it was down to the great form of Hart and the bad form of their finishing. If its Ribery/Robben from left/right it would have been more ugly.Unfortunately they are gonna play in the Etihad possibly.

In CL you need to get tactics and mentality right. BOTH.

I dont think we ever really got the tactics right (certainly not Mancini, Dortmund, Napoli, Ajax not one win in these 6 games...) in CL apart from 1-1 games here and there and also there is big problems mentally. Like not believing we are good enough , like not fighting on 110% on CL nights, some players take the piss with showing 10% workrate and they look disinterested. How is that?

Its done, its over, hope Pelle learns from the Bayern game and we move on. Roma is coming two weeks later, they already have 3 points they know exactly even a point at Etihad would be huge advantage to them.
Make sure we dont let them any point point in that game, 100% must win game, fuck it up tactically, mentally, and thery will be happy to walk away with 1 or even 3 points from Etihad.

Its time for us to put CL opponents under pressure instead of always us being under pressure.

Its time to be world class team not only in PL but in CL too. Both tactically and mentally. Its not that we need to be able to spend another 100-150m to get there. Thats a cheap excuse.Napoli, Ajax, Dortmund did not have the squad we had yet they finished ahead of us. We needed to make big tactical mistakes vs them, also mentally we weren not good enough while they tried to be perfect in tactics, worktrate, mentality and they ended up above us.

Roma will be a real big test for Pellegrini in CL level.Last year CSKA/Plzen didnt test us much but Roma will this year. Get it wrong and its CL fiasco again.

Alright, dross is harsh, Arsenal were dross last night.

It's just I expect so much more and again we fail to deliver. Wrong selection, wrong tactics, poorly timed subs. It'sjust all too fucking predictable.

We were shocking in the second half.

Morning mate, had to vacate the forum last night as it was predictably shite. I'm curious as to where you think he got his selection/tactics wrong. Milner for Nasri maybe but honestly that's just the standard response IMO to a poor result when he's in the side.

Tactically I think we were spot on, especially in the first hour of the game. We were a constant threat to Bayern on the break, and not since the first 30 minutes of the first CL game against them three seasons ago have we looked as comfortable dealing with what they had to throw at us. I realise Joe made some great saves but really you're talking about something exceptional or world class in the build up to every chance they created (Muller's cross, Gotze's flick, their Pep style movement and fluidity).

I have to say I was personally baffled by the Milner decision. The obvious decision was Milner left, Silva central, Navas right. However I suspect that the reason for playing him centrally was that Toure's increasingly shite defensive cover meant that Bayern were dancing through our central areas. But that for me is a weakness in the thinking of the coaching staff. It was a defensive substitution when it could've been a real attacking one. We should've pushed higher up rather than dropping deeper.

I also think as much as Bayern's side was weakened you have to respect the players they did have. People talk about Alaba and Lahm being a makeshift central midfield but in actual fact Pep has intimated that he prefers both players in those positions to their natural full back positions. Speaks volumes that Alaba got pushed further forward after 30 minutes of the game. They are arguably the best team in the world with arguably the most progressive manager/coach in the world so it's a bit unfair IMO to make out that we played their reserve side. Mueller, Gotze, and Lewa would've started for us last night over Navas, Nasri, and Dzeko had they been in our squad.

Performance wise there's definitely some criticisms to be made. I thought Clichy offered so little going forward it was frustrating as hell. Sagna was awful. Yaya not far behind. However I feel like a broken record but I really feel the need to defend Nasri again. I say it monthly but nobody seems to listen. Nasri is the ONLY left sided attacking option we have. I agree he's not really cut out for Bayern away or Barca away, because we don't see enough of the ball and we need direct running and pace on the counter. He's a ball recycler. In that sense he did his job just fine, but it was obvious that he wasn't offering enough going forward and defensively with Toure doing nothing he was getting overrun too often.

Brings me to what I've been thinking/feeling for three years now. It truly amazes me that two managers various directors of football/executives - hell Khaldoon downwards - none of these fools can see that we are crying out for competition for Nasri. For a different option on the left side creatively. It's frustrating as fuck seeing them talk about four strikers. We shouldn't have signed Jovetic last summer we should've signed Reus or Di Maria or Gotze (we tried I guess). The point is it's a huge glaring weakness at the highest level which has been constantly exposed in the champions league and yet seemingly nobody has seen fit to even begin to address it. What's worse, Di Maria now plays for the rags.

I love Pellegrini and Txiki - however as far as dropped bollocks go - the not getting competition for Nasri is the biggest and could prove the most costly of their time here so far. Particularly if the owners are craving CL success.

One other thing. I love the Champions League and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the match last night up until their goal. All those people who bleat about not giving a fuck about it - just don't watch it. Nobody's forcing you. I grew up dreaming about City going to places like the Allianz and I intend to savour every moment of every campaign until we win it.

Watched the full 90 back this morning.

We didn't play as well as i thought we did at the time of watching last night. I thought we were naive and in some ways stupid. Yaya needed to get off that pitch after an hour, he was doing absolutely nothing at all yet we waited and waited and then took Nasri (fair enough, did work hard defensively, lacked something overall though) off, then Edin off for Kun (why not for Yaya then?) and then stupidly took Navas off instead of Yaya and they scored from the posuition Navas would have been defending in.

Ridiculous decision not to take Yaya off!

I'm not too bothered that we played 442, we did okay defensively with it for spells, and bringing Milner on was the right thing to do. But we needed to get Yaya off and get whoever came on to close Alsonso and Lahm down more. However I don't think we exerted any pressure on Bayern for anymore than thirty seconds to a minute in the second half. With the ball, we were pretty in certain areas but too nice, not ruthless enough and nowhere near threatening enough.

We're too fucking nice!

We should have had a penalty! but overall I think that loss was our own fault through being scared to/not being allowed to sub Yaya and not being forthright enough in possession!

Sagna had a shocker with the ball, Nasri worked hard but was ineffective with the ball, Yaya made it seem like we had ten men in the seind half (he was a disgrace!).

As disappointed as I am about the fact that we seem incapable of winning the first group game each year and the fact that a number of players had very poor games, I also try to maintain a perspective about these things . Athletico Madrid, who last season beat Real Madrid and Barcelona to the La Liga title and came within 90 seconds of winning the Champions League and also beat Real again last Sunday away were beaten on Tuesday night in the CL by Olympiakos or to quote my colleague, "Olympi Fuckin akos!!!!"

Now imagine if we'd been beaten last night by Olympiakos instead of a team that has contested 3 of the last 5 CL finals? Meltdown Central!

Shit happens. Bad performances happen. Move on. As I've mentioned before, let's do our job and get behind the team.

At the game last night and just wanted to make sure the lovely lad who stood at the front all night shouting fuck off Munich, slags, fucking German rats etc.. Got home safe, would hate to think anything bad happened to him, he made us all proud last night and didn't spoil anyone's game, top blue he was
