Bayern post match thread

Without a serious improvement in personnel, and their use, we are never going to make it in Europe.

In addition, Pelle needs to get a fucking clue! I know 4-4-2 is his preferred set up, but he is fooling no-one by playing Silva in a slightly withdrawn role.

Tonight should have been about who was going to win the midfield battle and who was going to dominate possession. We lost both battles and the number of chances created and shots on goals demands attention.

4-5-1 is the ONLY formation to play away from home against your primary CL group opponent, unless you have an inflated sense of what you are bringing to the game. In addition, of those 5 across the middle, at least 3 of them have to be ball winners who can pass.

Tonight was a game for Navas-Fernandinho-Yaya-Silva-Milner. Nasri is not now and never will be the player to put in the midfield when we are looking to play Mano a Mano across the middle of the park. With that midfield, we would have had two-three players who could break forward in support, in addition to the overlapping wingers.

Even with all the great saves Joe made tonight, we still had a handful of chances to win the game. One of the best was in the first half when Navas broke forward and Dzeko was alone in the middle and Navas could not get it past Boateng. Another was the dead cert penalty, and Sergio's last minute chance, which could have gone in with a left foot instead of the outside of his right.

Well, it wouldn't be City if we didn't make it hard on ourselves, but now, with Roma's demolition of CSKA, we are in a battle. Matching results with Roma is now going to require getting something in Rome and scoring plenty of goals along the way. Makes the next game a huge "must win"!!

If there is one game that we needed Fernando for it was this one. We were out gunned in the middle of the park and playing Silva in that slightly withdrawn role was not the way to counter them. I don't think Pellers had too many options given the personel available but maybe starting with Milner in a midfield three with Silva right side would have been a better option.

A guy who does come out of tonight with immense credit is Zabba. If ever you needed an example of how valuable the is to us you got it tonight. Sagna doesn't look in his class. He doesn't seem to be as mobile as I remember him at Arsenal and I'm sure he's bulked up. He was awful on the ball and it hurt us as we do a lot of best work down the right.

A lot has been said about Yaya and I am genuinely worried. I hope it's just a blip but he doesn't look at it to me. It's easy to jump to conclusions but he's either lacking sharpness or is going through the motions and sulking, either way something needs to be done.

The positives were Joe and Ferna who were exceptional. Bayern still a class above us I'm afraid.

Well we got the three points in the end but we need to stop wasting so many chances and fast, Mueller in particular.
We deserved the win but made hard work of it and had you snatched a draw we'd both be looking nervously at Roma. Tbh l expect you to beat them at home, Moscow are a poor side and their score yesterday was a bit of overkill.

To be fair, there is absolutely nothing to fear of Bayern after last night. Yes they had a few chances and were short of players but still they weren't that impressive and went through many periods of the game without creating a chance. I thought we made a decent enough account of ourselves and really with a little more quality should of scored. We never deserved to lose.

We also ourselves were short too lets not forget, Sagna had his first test last night and I thought Yaya and Nasri were complete passengers at times. Had it been possible to play Fernando and Fernandinho we might of had some more resilience in the middle, I was really disappointed with Yaya last night and both the defensive and offensive sides of his game were just completely absent.

We still clearly need an impact player in the attacking midfield areas like Vidal or Reus who can drive forward because I just don't feel Nasri gives us enough and often drifts through games without really doing anything. I still think we should also of started Kolarov in midfield instead of Nasri to give us some quality down the left without risking Clichy getting caught forward. The middle was blocked up and unless Nasri was going to drive the ball through the middle he was never going to do anything else other than take corners. Kolarov would of given us a quality wide option to stretch their midfield out. In the end Silva struggled for space, Nasri drifted out wide and just tried to link play together but it just didn't have any objective because Clichy can't cross and Navas was marked out the game often except when they pushed up.

If you ask me it's not Bayern who should be feared in this group it is Roma. I think if we can get a point in Rome, a point or better at home too then we should be able to do CSKA twice that's at least 6-9 points. Bayern won't be looking forward to a trip to Rome either and on the showings so far we simply have to win our home games and do our best away.

This is a complex group and I don't think it will be as cut and dry as Bayern dominating it. Roma are a decent team and can pose a much greater threat on their own soil.

I don't agree. Pellegrini had his tactics worked out fine. We had space and changes when counter-attacking, especially in the 1st half.
The main problem was Yaya neglecting his duties in midfield. Either he got a knock during the 1st half or it was just one of those days again, you can never tell with Yaya. It however made Nasri to track back too often and that is simply not his best part. Fernandinho had a great game moreso because he had to cover for Yaya as well, letting our two central defenders exposed more than we wanted to. When Milner came on, it didn't change a thing other than a relatively decent 10 minutes we had more possession, but soon Bayern got us back where they wanted us.

Pellegrini, like any manager, is also depending on players form on the night and willing or able to execute what he wants them to do. What you can blame him for is not pulling out Yaya, but maybe he wanted to close up the shop by bringing Milner on for Nasri, as well as bringing on Kolarov for Navas with the latter doing his defensive duties admirable.

Especially in the 2nd half we showed too little in going foreward. Bayern got their reward, harsh for us as it was. If we would have managed a draw I would have said: Ok, they were the better side, but we got a reward to put in a defensive battle. Now that we lost, I'm left with a bad taste in my mouth because again I feel we showed too much respect. Or is it simply a fact that our 21man squad is not as good as theirs, and the German teams are simply better than the English ones.To be honest, I think it is a fact.

I agree that it's gonna be a battle to get through because of the Roma-result. They will now come to us looking for a draw and Italians are the best in doing so. I can see a Napoli-like game all over again. We need to make sure we win this one. Goaldifference is secundary to the reciprocal result.

As for individual performances: Hart MotM easily, Fernandinho, Navas, and Silva great, Yaya and Sagna ... well, the latter doesn't seem to be an upgrade to Richards yet.

We did ok first half, but could still have been 2 or 3 down. Second half we were fairly abject.

We're still far too easy to play against in midfield, most of which is down to Yaya. He struggles in the league against average sides that press well (Southampton, Swansea); once that goes up a level or two in Europe, the game completely passes him by and he becomes a real hinderance. Not a new thing, not much to do with not being arsed, just the way he is as a player. We just need the balls to drop him/haul him off when he's contributing fuck all - he should have been hooked for Milner last night, straight swap. That Silva was shunted out to the left wing just to accommodate him staying on the pitch was ridiculous.

We also lack conviction going forward - over the 90 minutes Dzeko had a decent effort, Sagna had a header from a corner, Silva had a chance second half, then Aguero at the end. That is nowhere near enough for a side with aspirations to mix it with the top teams. We're far too laboured on the ball at the moment, and don't get enough men up the pitch quickly to support the striker.

Don't really see any great prospect for improvement this season. We'll hopefully have enough to edge out Roma, but suspect we'll come up short over two legs against any of the better sides. To make the step up, I think we need a midfielder of the calibre of Vidal or Pogba, and a quick, direct wide attacker who poses a goal threat.

Don't forget Pellegrini wasn't even the manager last night. Sky did try a hatchet job on a few 'messages' that seemed to get through though!

Can someone remind me again ......Why did we let Boateng go?

Apparently we thought he was a bit soft, according to one report.
