I was fairly reliably told that, back in the day, the 'big three', Lineker, Hansen and Lawrensen were paid a combined 5 million for MOTD. They were all told that they would get a pay reduction and that's when Hansen chucked it, apparently he was on 1.5m and Lawrensen 1m. The others that came on occasionally were paid per appearance.

I heard that too, but then I'm wondering if Hansen left because he wasn't being paid enough then why did he not then go to another broadcaster? I'm sure plenty of others would have jumped at the chance to have him and offered whatever he wanted. Doesn't make sense to go from high salary to zero salary because the salary isn't high enough.

Its like saying, let Aguero and Silva go because they are on big wages! and just bring through a couple of players from the youth team

I'm not sure that the public service broadcaster, compulsorily funded, on pain of imprisonment, by the British public, has the same market forces that Manchester City have.

Not really, you'd have to work out the hours they were working plus factor in which shows attracted most viewers.

The gender gap is mostly down to male dominated sports surely?

MOTD will be the highest grossing programme and it's presenter then gets the highest salary.

They obviously want a household international name and I'm sorry to say men's football is better and more popular than women's.

If he was contracted for two different jobs then fair enough, but nowt in that list specifies that.

i don't think the figures tell the whole story by any means, hence the comments about Norton's cost, or Le Blanc on Top Gear not appearing at all.
e.g. Walker does FF, and I think was at the Olympics and other things too lat year. If that's effectively a five day week, he'll be paid more than those who don't do a five day week.
e.g. Naga Munchetty does weekends I think, which presumably pay more than weekday stuff.

I think Hansen just decided that after 20 years, he had nothing to add.
I think Lineker took a cut, while allowing him to have the contract with BT. He's said that he could be paid a lot more elsewhere, but thinks the BBC are important so he stays.

it isn't strictly a fair comparison, BH. Aguero and Silva are worth every penny and they are two of the shiniest stars in the football firmament. Lineker and much of what the BBC, ITV, Sky and BT spew out as STARS are just bang bloody average, and the programmes would not lose but a handful of viewers were they to depart. In fact, it might improve the viewing figures.

Hansen used to get 40k per week on MOTD 2-3 years before he retired. that's approx what lineker is on now.
