It's a catch 22 because the government makes a fortune on taxing cigs and alcohol, but yeah...giving people cash money for nowt is wrong imo. Vouchers for food and bills is all they should get.

In eastern europe they don't have a welfare system in many countries. If you don't work, you don't eat. If that suddenly happened overhere, it would be startling the amount of people who suddenly got off their arses. The people on that programme last night were not complaining about the lack of work, it was their expectations of pay that were the problem. Most said that they were financially better off staying at home and taking the handouts. This is what's wrong with the system, people who are fit to work should not be allowed to choose.

Someone earlier hit the nail on the head. There are jobs out there and those who dont need a high paid job to pay the bills and keep the mortgage going should start at the bottom and work your way up.The apprenticeship sheme is a cracking idea for those willing to push a younger person.Id even go as far as taking those at school who clearly arn`t gonna make college or uni to start a trade early...get them out of school young and get them doing apprenticeships. I would replace all these OTT subjects excluding maths and english and replace them with basic plumbing/electric/engineering and building etc etc.Employ a load of ex/retired workmen to teach them these skills alongside basic maths and english then when there ready for work they have a trade or the beginnings of one.Its about time this country dragged itself out of the service industry its become back to the industrial power house we once were. This way you take a load of kids into work and take older long term unemployed skilled people off benefits and into work. The amount of money saved would pay for a new dept to administer a voucher scheme(coupled with an id card scheme for the unemployed to prevent fraud). It would also be a massive vote winner for any party and give this country some self respect back!

How do we make "stuff" that can compete with people who make the same "stuff" in other parts of the world for a tenth of what we have to pay as a living wage?

germany,sweden,france and others do...

There was a hard working very well presented family who moved from Spain & got straight on the benifit system .they have a flat paid for in islington .the Landlords must be pi**ing themselves .is this what the benifit system is really for .to make money grabbing landlords very rich ?

France!!!!
Their economy is in a worse state than ours!
Although I admire their total independence in the arms market. They make their own planes, aircraft carriers, missiles. Even their nuclear force de frappe is theirs to control unlike ours where we'd need permission off the US to ever use it.

do you think we could ever compete with Germany as a manufacturer again?
I don't.

The benefits system in principle is a good idea and there to help people who through no fault of there own lose there job or come into difficulty..and there lies the problem..lazy ass bast@rds who actually dont want to work because they get looked after by the government etc etc..thats what pisses people off the most.

My solution..pay people in vouchers that can only be redeemed on food and clothing..not cigs and booze.Have everyone on benefits of a working age open a bank account pay directly into there the housing and other benefits. All childcare and other essentials paid in vouchers to be redeemed against goods excluding alcohol and cigs.If these people want these things then get off your f'cking lazy arses and get a job and pay for them yourselves!!

Extremely expensive to administer. You'd need yet another department set up to run it and it is very easily subverted.
You obviously didn't go to school in the era of dinner tickets.
There was a flourishing black market in selling these.

In the US they have EBT, it is a debit card system. Successfully replaced foodstamps which were often sold below face value to unscrupulous merchants.

We don't have the brands anymore. Just look at cars - Volvo, BMW, mercedes, Peugeot. Need I go on? And before anybody says it's all Mrs Thatchers fault or just bad management remember Red Robbo? The fact is it's gone

What can I say, I work for someone else, the NHS. I am, on a daily basis faced with lazy arsed, drugged/pissed up l patients who don't know how to wash let alone find work.

I've had a number of shit jobs, night porter, toilet cleaner, door to door neighbour hood scheme seller. I didn't get my degree till I was in my 30's.

For some people it is difficult to find work, on someways being victims of geography but that's only a small demographic. If you want a job you can find one.

The trouble with many people on benefits today is that they see it as 'their' money , their entitlement .

Tariffs provide incentive to keep the manufacturing at home.

There are so many examples of the benefits system being unfair and actually producing a welfare underclass (who ironically earn more than the minimum wage for doing fuck all) I can't help think that it is actually designed this way. Was the governments long-term solution to social exclusion to carry these people as a necessary evil.

The thatcher government consciously eliminated the manufacturing industry in this country to depend on service industries for it's national income. That is why the banks are now so important in this cOuntry. Only that has turned out to be the biggest fuck up in polital history.

This is all pretty much spot on BBS.

The main function of the welfare state is to prevent social unrest among the underclass, many of whom have no discernible work ethic.

In that sense, ironically, the section of society who have the most reason to resent the welfare state are the skilled and in work working classes who quite understandably must think 'what's the fucking point?' when they see people earning similar amounts to them for doing absolutely fuck all.

And, yes, this is one of Margaret Thatcher's most shameful and enduring legacies.

Agree with both of the above. Working people have never been more demotivated than they are now. Everyone is skint, stressed and seriously worried. I just drink... to avoid dealing with real life problems.
