this bernardo RC news is either bollocks or the clubs taking the piss. i dont see how it makes sense. without the new deal, hed have 2 years left, 1 year left next summer which means wed be forced to accept lower bids or lose him on a free the very next summer.

with the new deal, you basically double his wages and still let him leave next summer for 47m? that is just stupid.

If the RC clause is true.. it could be good for us for 3 reasons:

1. It basically prevents all of the barca loan + option bullshit and makes it.. either pay us in 1 lump sum or shut the fuck up!

2. without RC we'd have only 1 year left next year, and we don't want to lose him for as little as Kovacic. (Most of us have been resigned to losing him with a year left anyways, but this gives us a bigger fee).

3. If the RC isn't triggered by someone Bernardo likes.. he stays an extra year.

probably not giving him a new contract if he can just very easily leave the very next year without having to negotiate with the club while doubling his wages.
not renew him and sell him next summer
So you call board‘s decision to renew “ stupid” without bothering your highest IQ that there’s no buyers out there and the only club he maybe interested is literally bankrupt.

ask WHU to renew with Paqueta today for double the salary for 3 years but with an active RC clause from today of 47m.
which we can come in and activate.

thats how fucking mad this is...
It would be if the release kicked it straight away, except it won't so not mad.

It's called "an agreement". It's hardly reasonable to repeatedly say he can go, then to expect him to sign something that makes it almost impossible.

Many moving parts in City's business. Mendes is one of them. He has extracted the price for ending this summer's uncertainty. Thanks to KDB's injury and us running light on midfielders for years, he has us over a barrel.

Think of it as public recognition for a great servant.

Love it. He's now settled for a couple of years, getting fairly compensated for his importance, we're guaranteed a fee that while is low for his quality keeps him happy that he can move and us happy that we'll have time to source (or develop!) a suitable replacement. Goodwill both sides and now full focus. Wallop

yeah, you are absolutely clueless.

Run the contract down and return to Benfica as a city legend, great news
Totally agree, we will have had more than our moneys worth him staying for three more seasons and leaving as a free agent, its giving the player the total respect he deserves , to leave and play for his boyhood club.

I don't get this obsession that we shouldn't let him leave on a free, we will have had his best years.

I half expected a release clause in a new deal given he’s been desperate to leave for about 3 years. No way he’d have a sudden change of heart.

I’m just not sure what’s in it for the club - give him more money and an easier way out next Summer at the same time.

That’s me being ignorant, though, because we’re obviously not mugs.

Some people here would defend the board and tell us how great of a decision they are doing if we did what PSG did with Mbappe. They are just blind and everything City does is perfect.

BUT City board, with all their flaws, is still amazingly good and they are not stupid. That's how anyone should know this "new" Bernardo's RC is false. No team would do anything as stupid as that (maybe a few, but not us).

It's still fun seeing people defend such a stupid decision (and again false) because in their eyes whatever the board does is ALWAYS perfect.

If there is a false rumor about a Haaland/Lukaku swap, I am sure the same people would find a way to say how smart the board is.

If a RC in 24 are the terms of the Mendez/Bernardo camp for a contract extension then i would pass. Thought the purpose of the new contract was that we could have planning certainty/silence from Gestifute/Bernardo till at least 2025. What`s even the point for a new contract? One-time loyalty bonus would have the same effect (keeping Bernardo happy). With the old contract Bernardo would be cheaper on the books, we could save commission fee to Mendez & still have the power of desicion regarding the transfer fee in 24. If the worst case comes to fruition (free agent in 25) then so be it.

I still rather defend our board over some rando on internet though.
