Ian Bishop v the Rags
Would make a fine no.10 in the modern game.He moved to Holland and Belgium to play because of that ban and only returned to Sunderland after it was fully lifted. I remember Crossan coming to Maine Road with Sunderland and destroying our defence. I was delighted when he signed for City a couple of years later.
They wont believe just how magic a full MR, with the Kippax rammed, was. Nothing like it today.Too lazy to trawl back through 10 pages, but I'm assuming my two nominations have long since been nominated.
1. Big Dave against Ipswich. What a bullet of a header. And, not far behind....
2. Mick Mccarthy against the unmentionables. Both at the North stand end of Maine Road.
Younger BMers, ask your dads about Maine Road.
Agreed The Etihad is a fantastic stadium. But, like most modern stadia, it seems a bit soulless in comparison. But Maine Rd was looking a bit of a mess come the early 2000s. We probably had no real option, but to move at that stage. Two games I'll always remember in Moss Side, the FA Cup replay against Everton in '81 (the old place was heaving that night), and the 4-0 against utd in the league cup in '75. It was mayhem in the Kippax that night, and I was only 12 at the time, and couldn't punch my way out of a wet paper bag. Still can't, truth be told. They wont believe just how magic a full MR, with the Kippax rammed, was. Nothing like it today.
Good article about Johnny Crossan here. There’s a Guardian podcast about him as wellHe moved to Holland and Belgium to play because of that ban and only returned to Sunderland after it was fully lifted. I remember Crossan coming to Maine Road with Sunderland and destroying our defence. I was delighted when he signed for City a couple of years later.
Sorry Blue but you‘re incorrect there! The first goal against Huddersfield that day was indeed a diving header at the Scoreboard End in the first half.. but it was Mike ‘Tommy’ Doyle who scored it!A diving header by Johnny Crossan v Huddersfield on New Years Day 1966. There were over 47,000 in Maine Road for that match, City’s biggest crowd in years.
A photographer behind the goal managed to catch it just right with Crossan in mid air. That snap was plastered all over the papers the next day.
Yeah, spot on.. We battered Wanderers 4-1 that day, the week after Easter when we‘d lost at Bury 1-2 to end a decent unbeaten run on the way to the 2nd Division title.. I think Allison gave them a rocket up their collective jaxie for losing at Gigg Lane and we took it out on Bolton! Kennedy’s header was really powerful as you say, a real stand out goal!A really old one. Bobby Kennedy vs Bolton, MR 1966 (?) Bullet header from edge of the box. Anyone else remember that, or has my addled old brain made it up?
