Blue Moon Top 100 Bands Artists - Full List of Artists (pg 287)

Same thing happened when I went to see OMD! The kids were all there for So In Love.
Same when I saw them a few years ago. About two-thirds of the crowd wanted to hear the pop-tastic rubbish they got known for in the US and the other third were borderline FOCs like me hoping they’d do ABC Auto-Industry.

Nope — it was the “Crush” tour and “So In Love” had broken big stateside. Me and my buddies were there for all the earlier stuff :)
Ahhh thought you tied PIP with If you leave from the same film

I saw James support Squeeze at a Radio City NY and these women to my side chatting all the way through James saying they'd never heard of them. Next thing Laid came on and they looked like they'd all dropped E's, leaping to their feet, arms flapping all over the place for 3 mins before sitting back down. Not sure what film but it was in one apparently

Perfect accompaniment on the headphones to settle down to Santa’s gift of Morley’s book on Tony Wilson. @Rob_MCFC this one’s for you pal ;-)

(Edit - this is the Wilson tribute mix broadcast soon after his passing - contains a local tune or two)

I’m sure Tony Wilson would approve of tomorrow’s selection.

Obviously I remember him as the Granada reporter more than the music man. Just catching up on a few facts via Wikipedia. He attended the famous Sex Pistols concert in Manchester and, apparently, it was an epiphany. So it seems that watching a load of tuneless wasters inspired him to help oust prog and arena rock.

I have always believed that music was about people who wrote great songs, were supremely talented on their instruments and made songs with great melodies. So again, whilst I am not knocking those who like this kind of stuff, you can probably see why I have a problem with Mr Wilson and his Factory lot?

I would suggest a goodly number of Factory artists wrote a goodly number of great songs with great melodies. Supreme talent on the instrument is a different animal. Sure, show-offs will be show-offs a lot of time, and why not, but did Picasso or Monet or Dali paint what they painted because they couldn’t manage photorealism talent-wise or because they wanted to create something new and different? The “new and different” matters a lot to me, more than talent, as long as it is accompanied by great songs (or great sounds) with great melodies.

Oh — and hooks. Did I mention hooks?

You don't have to be supremely talented on instruments or have great melodies in fairness. A lot of great songs can be nothing more than a few simple chords or a basic riff.

That’s a nice riposte. I do take you point re: Picasso and Dali. I saw Guernica on a visit to Madrid a couple of years ago, and it is an incredible piece of work. Odd, for sure, but no doubt it took real talent.

Different is also good, no doubt about it. But I’d prefer different and tuneful. But one man’s meat and all that .....Anyway, more on that later today

Definitely. In no way am I saying that music has to be complicated to be appreciated. Some of the music I like best is just a man and an acoustic guitar. However, in the Sex Pistols case, they were different and rubbish. I know not everybody agrees because they finished just outside the top 100 in this poll.

@FogBlueInSanFran wanted Hooks. Well, we may not have Dr Hook or Captain Hook, but we do have Peter Hook .......

Fun fact: Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook formed Joy Division after attending a Sex Pistols concert. Whether that was because they were inspired by what they heard, or whether they thought that anything would be better than that old racket isn’t clear. Either way, more than 40 years after Ian Curtis’ death, their popularity doesn’t appear to have waned.
