Blue Moon Top 100 Bands Artists - Full List of Artists (pg 287)

I can understand Oasis being Top five. City connections and Manchester band, loads of hits etc.
They don’t do anything for me however.
My worst nightmare is coming true -TS at no 1 ffs ?
My biggest nightmare is the bloody Beatles at no. 1. We know they're top 2 now and can't see the Smiths or Stones beating them. I thought Oasis were the only band in with a chance of stopping that but obviously not.

I like Oasis - a decent first two albums, a few good tunes on the 3rd and The Masterplan (as I only found out recently) has some excellent songs on. They're the only Manchester band I'd put in my top 50 and are at least closer to the true spirit of roots rock and roll and their local counterparts.

Hmm a Dipper band no1 on a City forum ? :-)

So just to spell it out, because I know semi-finals are a confusing concept (I think it's time for the old "we need a slide rule here" chestnut).

Oasis lose semi-final one, and finish 4th.

The Beatles advance to the final, so they will be 1st or 2nd

Tomorrow, plucky underdogs, The Smiths, will take on the mighty Rolling Stones, which means one of them will finish 3rd and the other will advance to the final.

Any more questions?

Suck it up Beatle haters! Just need the Stones to dispatch the Smiths in the other semi now for sanity to have prevailed completely!

I got totally caught up in the hype surrounding Oasis at the time, not only an exciting time for British music but an exciting and liberating time in my life. An added touch of frisson as a former Burnage boy myself although I couldn’t claim to have known them. I did know Max Beesley though, slightly but that’s another story.

My big regret was not seeing them at Maine Road in 96 but by then I was caught up in the excitement of a new (and ongoing I’m glad to say) relationship and an impending move to New Zealand.

We were only away for a couple of years, during which Blair and New Labour were swept to power and the sense of optimism and excitement continued. In truth though I think Oasis’s magic was short lived. The first two albums were great and captured the times, the Masterplan is probably their best but really it was a case of diminishing returns after that and I don’t find much in their subsequent albums to excite me and in truth I don’t listen to the first two much nowadays. There are other bands from that era who have stood the test of time better.

I can’t deny their appeal and success but I think it’s more hype than substance, they certainly can’t match the Smiths for cultural legacy and consistency. It would have been a travesty if Oasis had come higher than them.

As for the Stones and Beatles, ah well I’ll hold my tongue for now but one of them wasn’t half bad

Wouldn’t say sanity has completely prevailed, with the Smiths anywhere near the top 10, or Oasis as much as I like their first few albums for that matter.
I know. I was only messing about. I actually had The Smiths at 14 on my list…. but a country mile behind The Beatles and The Stones

I used to be mistaken for Morrissey alot in the mid eighties. Quite liked the attention and could do a fair impression of his singing so played on it many times (no flowers in my back pocket though)
Never got the music and certainly find the man cringe in so many ways.
When talking with friends in the US I am surprised by the reach the Smiths had and still have over there.
Beatles get my vote by a mile but the Stones and Smith's meh!

As a Kent lad, my mates would call me Rkid for my obsession with Oasis - seemed like everyone around here was into Rnb, Hip Hop and Rap but that wasn't for me.

Morning Glory was huge and Wonderwall, Back In Anger etc was played all the time - couldn't help but get swept up in the Britpop euphoria at the time , but it was The Masterplan album that really made me fall in love with Oasis, how they produced so many effortless amazing B sides I will never know - even the b-side songs that didn't make the Masterplan are amazing.

I loved SOTSOG, Heathen Chemistry and Don't Believe The Truth albums when they were released at the time, but looking back it's really Definitely Maybe & The Masterplan that does it for me now - I find Morning Glory a struggle, maybe just heard it too much

They were the last great band for me, their attitude to life, their swagger, their confidence was just great. Saw them twice at Wembley, V Festival and Finsbury Park - they were epic every time.

It's a shame they split, but I'm glad they did looking back, their music was drying up and they've gone on to produce some great solo stuff.

Slide Away will always mean the world to me
