Bobby Charlton passes away at the age of 86

My Dad did the same watching City and the Rags in the 1950's , but after the Munich air disaster he chose to only go to Maine Rd. , when i asked him why , he just said things had changed but never got to the bottom of it.
The Munich disaster probably got the Rags loads more fans with the sympathy element , maybe a lot of outsiders started going to the Swamp for morbid curioisity , mysteriously my Dad went the other way and never stepped inside the Swamp again after Feb 1958 , he had his reasons but he never shared them
I did that for a number of years as my mates dad took us. I always found I had more fun at Maine Road because of the fans self deprecating humour, so a Blue is what I am.

With the passing of Bobby Charlton, can’t be many of the World Cup winning side left ….

I was too young to remember Charlton's playing days so no point in me getting involved in any debates over whether he was England's greatest player or close to it. What I do know is that he scored an absolute shit load of bangers. No doubt he must've scored the odd tap-in but I don't think I've ever seen any footage of him scoring a goal where he didn't put his foot through it from 15 yards or more out.

One memory I have from around 1982-83 is watching Football Focus and they were previewing that weekend's United v Liverpool fixture. I was only about 12 or 13 at the time and they showed some of the goals from previous seasons. One of them was from the early 70s at Anfield. It was a trademark Charlton strike but this one was different as it was from a much tighter angle than his usual goals. I swear that the ball must've hardly deviated from being only about 2 or 3 feet off the ground all the way from just after leaving his boot to hitting the back of the net. Funnily enough, I randomly stumbled across it again a couple of months ago on some general football Facebook page and it was exactly how I remembered seeing it all those years earlier.

RIP Bobby, a true English footballing legend.

I hope that our younger fans do show the required respect for Sir Bobby this weekend. He was part of English football's pinnacle moment and regardless of the colour of his shirt that should be respected. It should also be noted that the three club legends soon to be honoured outside of the Etihad used to mix with the three outside the swamp.

Colin Bell's autobiography has a foreword by Sir Bobby. Summerbee and Best were very good friends. And Law - well we know what he did in a blue shirt! They respected each other off the pitch and gave each other hell on it. Exactly how it should be.
