He might need to move a few miles to not be recognised for a little while, but it’s hardly crime of the century.The offence will be spent within a relatively short amount of time and if he gets himself a decent lawyer afterwards he can get the articles removed from searchable listings citing the right to be forgotten.
I've successfully done this with a local newspaper on behalf of someone else just by contacting the editor. Not for a serious offence or something crass and offensive but once an article becomes yesterday's chip paper it's no longer economical to fight a legal challenge to keep up.
