Bullying and the devastating consequences.

Nope I'm not a scally and most people in Manchester aren't either..
Not quite sure if you are trying to be clever or its the Yank soh that doesn't carry very well..
Having grown up there, and visiting often, I refer you back to the original comment! :)

I must admit, my thoughts have turned to this subject as my son gets older.

He asked me 2 nights ago about if he can have a phones as all his friends have one. He's nine.

I told him 'no' for the simple reason that he doesn't need one yet and I'm trying protect him from the nonsense of social media.

"But I want to talk to my friends", he said.

"That's fair enough", I replied"But you'll see your friends in 2 weeks and you'll have lots to catch up on, then!"

He asked what if he wants to text me, at some point & I said you shouldn't be texting me at school or he'd be with his mother and to use her phone!

He's curious about social media and we'll probably end up in rows over it, but I pointed out his mother that she engages in the FB type of media, so she'll have to warn him of the potential pit falls. I think I want to teach him about all the potential negatives and how it can be dealt with, so he's armed, than enter a world without knowledge and be powerless. He'll have a phone at about eleven, I think.

It's a small thing, but extremely dangerous, social media and I'm genuinely anxious for his first real engagement in the internet world.
I had this same issue with a daughter of 9/10 few years ago. I didn’t want her to have a mobile, didn’t see that she needed one and was worried that the mobile could lead to bullying problems for her. Her mother didn’t agree with me and bought her one. My daughters mother and I broke up and I found out she had been bullied through text messages received on her mobile.

You are right to be concerned, but sadly you will have to expect to be thought of as a miserable bastard as I was.

I am glad that you and @jimharri find humour from my experience of being bullied badly at school
I apologise if you were upset by my ham fisted attempt at humour. However, you did put "lol" at the end of your post that I quoted. Maybe I'm reading that wrong, but that appears to be you trying to find some humour in a sad situation. The fact that I started this thread ought to be an indicator as to how I feel about bullying.[/QUOTE]

The problem you have is that if you buy them a mobile phone they can get bullied on it, but if you don't they end up being excluded from stuff and can still end up getting bullied without knowing about it until they go to school.

Found out my 7 year old daughter and her friend had been threatened at school by a lad of 8, he said he’d stab them!! Straight onto the school, they asked the parents of the lad to come in, they said they couldn’t come in until Monday and this was on a Wednesday, great parenting, anyway seems the lad has problems so they are getting help, but where does he get the idea to even say that?

A thread on bullying turning into various mini arguments between what I'd assume are people of adult age.

If it can happen on a forum full of adults then god only knows what happens on social media between kids. Bet it can be relentless and difficult to deal with.

Never had much of an issue as as kid really, even as the smallest in our year at high school I was sporty so had a lot of friends that were the 'popular' who always had my back but I drifted and had friends in all the different groups that formed during high school, the same thing in my working life always got on with everyone until a few years back when a few of the older guys retired and we ended up employing some new lads around my age, they have slowly but surely formed a clique and make shit up about anyone that won't partake in their corrupt shit they get up to (creating overtime, doing fuck all on weekend shifts etc) slowly but surely I feel like an outsider in a team of 15 guys, last night I even feigned an illness to not go on the works Christmas do as I know i'm not liked (basically for doing my job) and just couldn't be arsed with having to be 'nice' to people I wouldn't give the steam off my piss to.
