what happens when the reserve teams get promoted to the same league as their first team? Also, what about drawing your own club in the Cup?

I take it there are rules about preventing this sort of thing which actually undermine the whole point of a competitive league.

They are only allowed up to third division level and would not be allowed into the same division as the first team. It is possible to draw your own club in the cup as far as I know but I don't recall it happening.
Exactly 20 years ago Hertha Berlin reserves reached the cup final, they lost 0-1 to Leverkusen who had, coincidentally, also knocked Hertha's first team out by the same score earlier in the competition.

Reserve teams can play as high as League 3 (VFB Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund reserve teams are in League 3 at the moment).
The lower leagues are played in several regional or local divisions. It may happen that, let´s say, on the 8th tier, there is a club with his first team and reserve team on the same level. They then play in Division A and B for example, same level, different groups

For Bundesliga teams the reserve team is a U23 team. At smaller clubs there is usually a big difference in quality between the first team and the reserve team, so that they normally won´t play on the same level.

In the german cup reserve teams had been banned some years ago.

The first round of german cup is played by 64 clubs. The 36 Bundesliga clubs, the four best teams from League 3 and 24 winners from the cups of the regional football associations. It is a gift for small clubs. They get a Bundesliga club at home (guaranteed), tv coverage and the money earned with that match usually is enough to finance half of their whole season. When League 3 was introduced, there was a protest against reserve teams of Bundesliga clubs in it and the Bundesliga clubs said, okay, therefore let´s take the reserve teams out of the cup.

there was the draw for the first round yesterday by the way. Easy matches for the big clubs.

SV Schott Jena (League 5) - Hamburger SV
1. FC Saarbrücken (League 3) - SV Werder Bremen
FV Illertissen (League 4) - Eintracht Frankfurt
SV Darmstadt 98 (League 3) - Borussia Mönchengladbach
BSV Schwarz-Weiß Rehden (League 4) - FC Bayern München
BFC Dynamo (League 5) - VfB Stuttgart
SV Wilhelmshaven (League 4) - Borussia Dortmund
FC Nöttingen (League 5) - FC Schalke 04

I loved your "easy" matches for the clubs and remembered the recent year. The lower leagues start into their seasons earlier and have a much longer winter break - they usually do not have a heated pitch like the 1st and 2nd league have. The start of the Regionalliga Bayern (4th league) e.g. starts mid of July. The first cup round is on the weekend prior to the Bundesliga start. So the smaller teams have a little advantage as they are already in full flow whereas the Bundesliga teams are still in preparation. And a lot of the Bundesliga teams or players think it will be an easy match - against players for which the match is the match of their lifes...

Last year 4th league Berliner AK threw out Hoffenheim with a 4:0, 3rd league Offenbach threw out Greuther Fürth, Worms and KSC did the same with Hertha and HSV. Nürnberg lost against Havelse, Bremen against Preussen Münster, Frankfurt against Aue.

So it was 7 of 18 Bundesliga teams that lost against the minor teams in the first round!!!

Don´t think, that in those matches i mentioned as easy ones, the Bundesliga clubs will go out. Werder and Mönchengladbach will have to do a little bit of work, maybe

In 2000/01 the teams of VfB Stuttgart ;-)
After Stuttgart II destroyed Eintracht Frankfurt 6:1. Bembel, you remember?
But as far as I know there were several players (Hleb, Amantidis etc) who had to play for Stuttgart I and not for Stuttgart II like the round before against Frankfurt.

I seem to recall Werder playing Werder reserves one year as well.

Am I right to think the Bundesliga fixtures are out on Friday? Will Bundesliga 2 fixtures be announced as well?

I am looking to plan a trip over at some point

Bundesliga fixtures are indeed going to be announced on Friday, however its just the first 6? matchdays where the date will be officially confirmed.

I assume its the same for Bundesliga 2.

Which grounds are you planning to visit? Maybe we are able to offer some help... :)

Thanks for reminding me! :( Thought I had this woeful event erased from my memory...

Thank you very much for the offer to help. In the months to come I may be in touch. I've been teaching myself a bit of German so I am hoping to put it to use at some point over the season, even though it is still quite basic at this stage.

Whether I go or not will be entirely dependent on who City get in the Champions League draw so I wont know for a while, but I'm hoping to draw a German side, or somewhere close to the German border.

My hope would be to get to Germany the Friday before our Champions League game and stay for 10/11 days until the following Sunday/Monday getting to as many games as possible in from both first and second division. That would mean me missing two City games as well so it depends which games they would be. In an ideal world (for me, not City) we would draw Leverkusen because its the only place we can draw that I've not already been, but I'd go back to Bayern, Schalke or Dortmund if we got them. Id like to get to Berlin if possible but it might be better If I aim to base myself somewhere in North Rhine-Westphalia due to the number of teams in the area. I'm just considering the possibilities at the moment.

Are there any clubs where it would be very difficult/impossible to get tickets with a few weeks notice?

Good luck in the Europa League this season. It seems to be ignored in this country but I've had some great trips in that competition.
