Yesterday Köln and Düsseldorf met for the first time after 14 years for the Rhine Derby (1:1)

There is a natural rivalry between the cities of Köln and Düsseldorf and the clubs dont really like each other either.

Düsseldorf Fans got a warm welcome when they arrived in Köln and their trams got obviously pelted with bottles and the like.

Cologne Fans did some Choreo (Red and white are our colours and only we are worthy to wear them)

Schweinsteiger in no way was better than Lahm, Muller or Ribery even at Bayern. Just like when Bale won the award it seems like the media just vote for the biggest names rather than merit.

Tbf if they had simply voted for the biggest names then Ribery would have walked it, he is God in Munich. I think Ribery should have won it personally, he has been in superb form for a year now.

I see it differently. First - all was a team effort. Ribery when it only means the Bundesliga, Müller when it is about the CL - and when it is about all Schweinsteiger is not a bad choice. Ribery should get the France player of the year - and I guess that will mean a lot to him.

But - apart from Lahm - that is probably the 3 most important players for that year - and if you look how close it was you can imagine how difficult it will be in European votings to have one Bayern player winning.

Today - Schalke vs Dortmund

Schalke even sorts the yellow colours out of the plastic party sticks in their catering...

Biggest rivalries or biggest derbies?

Biggest rivalry is meanwhile for sure Dortmund - Bayern.

If we are talking biggest derby then Schalke - Dortmund is up there as it basically divides a whole region in Germany and both clubs got a massive following.
Other than that there are a ton of interesting derbies in Germany, however the best of them rarely happen these days as there is usually a pretty big gap in leagues between the involved clubs (Hamburg - St. Pauli, Frankfurt - Offenbach, Bayern - 1860, Frankfurt - Kaiserslautern, Kaiserslautern - Waldhof Mannheim, Stuttgart - Karlsruhe etc.)

In the Bundesliga the most interesting "derbies" at the moment are Bayern - Nürnberg, Hamburg - Bremen, Schalke - Dortmund and Braunschweig - Hannover is going to be pretty big next year as well.

There are a couple of "minor" derbies like Gladbach - Leverkusen, Stuttgart - Freiburg and Frankfurt - Mainz, however they are more or less only second choice as the real rivals of the teams play in lower leagues.

I always felt BvB vs Gladbach/Leverkusen/Hamburg games are always very interesting....

Braunschweig - Hannover is going to be massive. My local has several fans of both and the rivalry is intense, the fact that they've not played each other for a few years just adds to it.
Unfortunately the game has had violent clashes in the past, the police will have to be on the ball.
Our only "local" rivalry atm is Nürnberg, Sechzig aren't on the radar and have nowhere near as many fans as Nürnberg in anycase.
I was at one game in the 80's in the Olympiastadion (78,000) where 1 FCN brought 30,000 ! to Munich, that was an atmosphere I can tell you !

Biggest Derby is Schalke-Dortmund. Really interesting this season will be Braunschweig against Hannover. But, to be honest, the real Derby in the Ruhr Area is Schalke against Rot-Weiss Essen. Many years since they played each other and I know many people who are really looking forward for the day when this Derby will be played again.

I disagree with both comments. Schweinsteiger is a huge name in world football. I would say he is actually slightly bigger than Ribery and has the added bonus of being German.

As Maldeika I usually agree with your comments, but not here. Ribery was fantastic in the champions league as well, whilst Muller was brilliant in the league too as seen by the number of goal ans assist he got. Then Lahm was just fantastic every game. Lahm really does not get the recognition he deserves.
