What I think we saw tonight is effectively the end of an era for us. This team is now heading downwards rather than up. This was not a ‘one off’. Having seen magnificent, flowing football which has won us titles and cups, we all expect, anytime soon, that normal service will be resumed. However, this constant ‘stuttering’, with the occasional good performance (Stoke away?) interspersed with disappointing, below par and laboured performances looks like it is the ‘new norm’ - it has gone on for too long for it not to be.
Some of our ‘sacred cows’ have now reached a stage where, if we are to evolve and improve, will have to be moved on or, at the very least, not be guaranteed a first team spot. Yaya needs to be shipped out. Great, great player when he wants to be, but at 31 and looking increasingly disinterested, time is up. Vinny, Zabaleta, Silva and Aguero are all pretty much ‘shoe ins’ into the team, but they are below par as a collective to often these days.
We need an injection of 3 top top class players to give our existing quality players a lift and to replace some of them.
In the meantime, the team, management and fans should not take the media circus seriously, in anything they say, but particularly the bit where they assume that we are guaranteed a top 4 spot.
