Buying Success: Discuss

John Henry Davies - Newton Heat/Manchester United
Henry Norris and William Hall - Woolwich Arsenal/Arsenal
Hilton Crowther then whoever bought him out - Huddersfield
James W Gibson - Manchester United
The Moores family (Mancunians, by the way) - Everton ("the Mersey Millions") and then Liverpool
Matthew Harding - Chelsea
Roman Abramovic - Chelsea
Sheikh Mansour - City

Going in to big debt whilst breaking transfer records in the late 1980's would be the same. Not sure why Jack Walker was missed off.

don't want to sound cynical or cold hearted but - man united are a club largely built on sympathy

Three things happened to United in just a few decades of each other:

They were utter shite, couldn't get anyone to watch them, couldn't afford their own kits, were a second tier[/rate] club who didn't win a thing for 37 years. They were about to go bust when James W Gibson went to them and saved their bacon.

Old Trafford was bombed and United used Maine Road while we had been relegated and United we're in the top flight. Because they were playing the bigger games against better teams, they started attracting the bigger crowds which stuck with them after Old Trafford was ready to host games again.

And the Munich Air Disaster. Not only the tragic circumstances that brought a great deal of sympathy but also United have used it as a marketing tool over the decades.

They can point to Busby, they can point to Ferguson, they can point to their 1950s and 1990s youth teams; but without those^ three things Manchester United would not be a club full stop, or at least would not have the support they saw grow from 11000 average attendances in the 1930s which made a huge difference to gate receipts and the size they became.

It's slowly starting to dawn in me, that some football supporters are hypocrites.

Anything in particular in mind, GDM?
united fans wanking themselves into a frenzy about their desperation-tinted spending spree, maybe?

Aye. But they've always been wankers, just have a different outlet.

which they exploit shamelessly whenever they can.

The families of the Busby Babes who - were kicked out of their houses soon after the disaster - don't think the rags were built on sympathy!
