The region of Midi Pyrenees is a beautiful and historic place. I was once told that the only people they hate more than the British is the Parisians. There is a town called Llivia. it is on the French side of the Pyrenees. It is totally surrounded by France and yet it is Spanish. Apparently after many years of fighting between the 2 countries France and Spain agreed a border, Llivia was on the French side, they refused to accept this and were happy to carry on fighting. The French government was so fed up they let them carry on being Spanish. If you go there, all the cars are registred in Spain, the houses are different and of course they speak Spanish.

My knowledge is small and only known because of watching the Tour De France as they have raced through the region and explained.
Fascinating history that is close to home but we know nothing of.
