Summerbuzz said:stats are always interesting but it's important to remember football is much more of a team game than baseball, where the RBI is truly a key indicator. even american football, people have strictly defined team moves. football is as much about transitions between 'plays' as the plays themselves. so whilst Tevez' harrying might not give him the best stats, because closing down an opponent without regaining possession cuts off opportunities for passes I feel comfortable in saying his overall contribution on the pitch is better than Dzeko. that's before we even begin to think about how it forces the opponent to play the pass more quickly (implying less accuracy) and how he can carry the burden for the likes of Yaya and Silva, so they retain sharpness and explosive power for attacking.
Aguero is similar. TBF they have a physical advantage - they are smaller, more agile, and it requires less energy to shift a 10 stone frame around than a 14 stone frame.
I always think this is something people overlook when they bemoan the lack of quick pressing compared to Barca or Spain - their front lines are always very small and agile. It remains to be seen just how well this would work in the premier league, where large centre halves have an advantage due to a: weather, meaning high passes are harder to deal with therefore are played more often, and b: the more lax refereeing we have, more use of body strength is allowed, therefore big players have an advantage.
The German clubs appear to have sort of turned this on their head, but I think it's easy to read too much into one season. Schweinsteiger and Martinez were, like the rest of the Bayern team, in freakishily good physical condition and the Spaniards looked drained by comparison.
err... yeah... Dzeko... no... wait... Cavani
I think he is the forward equivalent of Javi Martinez - not the last word technically but an 8 out of 10 with 9/10 physicallity and 10/10 workrate. and some very interesting abilities. A better finisher than creator, by far, but will miss a lot of chances. He won't half give centre halves the run around tho.
I'm not entirely sold on him, certainly not at the price... but he is the kind who can win any game at any time, and when he doesn't do that, he will run himself stupid. My judgement is that Dzeko has an almost equal ability to score, maybe even the same ability to hold the ball (i.e. suprisingly little, but so it is for Lewandoski and Gomez, amongst others)...but Cavani's pace to run behind is much greater, and his work when we don't have the ball will be a big asset.
the rbi is in fact one of the worst possible baseball stats to judge a player's value
