I think for the stuff you will more than likely need it for (local taxis, kebab shops, small boozers etc) lira will likely be better

One of the best things to do in Istanbul is take a ferry up the Bosphorous. They go from Karakoy pier and stop at the little towns all the way up to where the Black Sea begins. Sit in the sun and enjoy the views.
