Chelsea (A) Post Match Thread

for clarity the back pass rule means the free kick is taken from where the goalie handles it, and if it is inside the six yard box, it is moved to the six yard box line. The ref got it wrong, in many ways, for that 'backpass'

great performance, City were excellent in the first half with top notch work rate, positioning and really took some chances. Cancelo is really growing, Bernardo is slowly improving and sterling was much more like his effective self. cant be arsed with negatives.

I was worried before the game & the first few minutes Kev looked absolutely useless. And then we kicked into gear. That itself is something slightly different - you can normally predict exactly what our performance is going to be like in those first few minutes.

Their goal was the first time Stones has been caught up field in a long time. I am not saying it was down to him by any means, but it might not be the worst reminder to us going forwards

Yeah, there's nowt wrong with a back pass until the goalie gets a hand on it.

But it has to be the kind of performance we saw in the first thirty that sends the opposition, this match The Alty Tit and VAR into the kind of trajectory that happens when yer let air out of a balloon. Their heads will be spinning and it'll be a case of "What? Who, Where" When? How? Oh, goal!" Do it three times in just over half an hour and we have fucked the lot of 'em. Goals coming thick n' fast that they can't chalk 'em all off!

We were second best in the first 15 minutes, but something clicked after that and we blew Chelsea away in the subsequent 15. We created 4/5 golden opportunities in the first half and conceded only a half-chance. The defensive stability we’ve picked up has allowed Gundogan more freedom and left us less vulnerable to counter-attacks.

I feel like we’re finally somewhat difficult to beat. The opposition have to actually create something for themselves, rather than us gifting them simple goals. Most importantly, our defensive stability hasn’t just come from controlling possession. We aren’t just a minor mistake away from conceding anymore. There is some robustness.

We started the second half well. Our build-up was the best in this period, but we were very wasteful and couldn’t make anything of some really good opportunities. The game became more even afterwards, but it felt like we still created more and better opportunities than Chelsea. Really disappointing to concede at the end, because we defended well in general. You could clearly hear Pep’s frustration with conceding that goal.

Overall, a positive performance. Probably the best this season, though that’s not saying much. I still don’t think we’re performing even close to what we saw a two or three seasons ago. Strong performances from Cancelo, Gundogan, Kevin and Foden. Hopefully we can continue to build some form and finish the season well.
