City 10 Huddersfield Town 1

It feels like a lifetime ago, I remember it well albeit that I was listening to Mssrs Reeve and the Doc along with Brian Clark's customary low-octane commentary on Piccadilly the cold November afternoon in 1987... after the previous season of barely ever scoring, to hit 10 in one match was just great! They were exciting times, the early fruition of our much-vaunted youth programme married with some bought-in talent - Paul Stewart for example, and Old heads like McNab, Gidman and Clements. I do the love Pink newspaper headline though, "Hands off Machin" says Peter Swales... wow, he was a right tw*t wasn't he!!?

One of my all time favourite City fixtures which I've heard many tales of blues missing the fixture for various reasons.

My all time favourite shirt but I couldn't buy it then, I hadn't the money.... :(

Had flown home from Japan overnight. Was jet lagged (and truth be told, hungover) to feck. Got in, and called mate to say I wasn't bothering with the game. He didn't answer as it was early morning, so left a message on his answer machine (well pre mobiles, lol)

Was well away when he phoned me back at midday, telling me not to be such a soft tart, and get to the pub (Robin Hood Inn, Newton Heath) where he was calling from, and he had got me a pint in and I better be in to get him one back.

Almost didn't, but so glad I dragged my corpse to the pub and the game. Cheers Cashie mate. :-)

Our school were doing a concert my class were the choir, so sat at the front. I can remember like it was yesterday that during a number from the wizard of oz a scream of noooooo could be heard from backstage as the caretaker was told the score at the first game he'd ever missed.

Learnt a valuable lesson that day in my city watching life.

I've posted before about this game but seeing we're on the subject it's a tale worth telling again. In the summer of 1987 I'd moved to a village near Huddersfield and quite a few Terriers supporters frequented the local pub. Two of these didn't have transport to the match so I gave them a lift. It was pay at the turnstile in those days so they stood with me & my mates on the Kippax. Not a good move on their part, as it turned out. They left when the 7th went in & met me back at the car. Then they had to suffer the trip back over the Pennines but TBH I was a lot easier on them than I could have been. I reckoned they'd suffered enough !

Piccadilly's ",its a goaaall" jingle got plenty airplay that day....

i was at Huddersfield Poly at the time and travelled over on a footie special train.....I can tell you that was one quiet train on the way back.
I had made sure i had no colours on show before i went. It was one of my better moves.

We had a great FA cup 3 match Ding dong with them a few weeks later as well.

Happy Days

I was another who heard it on Piccadilly, I loved James H and The Doc. I think that show was almost perfect and there was nothing as exciting as then the music slightly faded and "It's a goal!" came on! I couldn't believe we'd get 10! I bet the week after I would've expected a 6-0 win and a 6-0 win the week after... ah the joys of youth before I experienced "typical City"!!

Strange to think if we played Huddersfield today, I wouldn't be too surprised if we got 10. I'd probably be more annoyed about conceding a goal and my Dad would be moaning about Mahrez only getting 3!! :)
