If City didn't have a link with Rangers why was the souvenir shop sellings Rangers shirts?

Packet on left bottom row with what looks like McEwan's written on it. Rangers shirt sponsors 88/89. Good spot.

Happy to be corrected, but I understand the first time this was mooted (Rags = Catholic, City = Prod) was Busby in a tv interview in either the 50s or 60s when he openly said "...are the Catholic club...".

My dad - schooled at St Francis, behind the monastery in Gorton - a Catholic and a Blue had never heard of this apparent religious link, as many Catholic, Gorton Blues of his age/era hadn't either.

Rangers have always had strong links with Chelsea and Everton. I think the so called link with City stems more from the 80s, or at least became more prevalent then, as we saw the multiple testimonial/friendlies/love-ins that lot were having with the Celtic. So rather than being a religious thing, it was more going opposite to that shower.

Often at games, in the Kippax, the shout would go up "Celtic!" followed by "Rangers". I couldn't tell you if it was 50/50, whether anyone was a genuine Celtic/Rangers fan or whether it was just shouted for the sake of something to shout. I think the latter personally as the shout was often followed by "Tiswas" with the response "Swap Shop!". Pretty certain it had nothing to do with defining certain sections of our fan base!!!

Whilst religion has certainly played a part in our early history being founded as St Marks, I am of the opinion (based on experience and what I've read) that as a club it has never really played the kind of significant role it has for the Old Firm and such.

Think my Dad went to the same school, and this is the first I've really heard of so called Rangers links, my Dad never mentioned it, all our family are Catholic and Blue, and with Irish roots, I've always leant towards Celtic ironically enough, and even went to college in Moss Side in the 80's.
Not that it matters anymore, I believe in god as much as I do aliens these days! Plus my wife is Hindu, so I've probably been in more Hindu temples than churches in the past decade ( food is better for a start!)

I happen to be CofE and a lifetime City supporter. I was at a school on Princess Road and walked to City matches in the evenings and after school on Saturday mornings. Almost everyone at school was a City supporter and most, but by no means all, boys at the nearby RC school supported the Rags. I remember my mother telling me not to go out with my City scarf in 1962 ( I was eight) on Easter Sunday when the RC marches were taking place.

Does any of this ancient history matter? Not at all. We just need to be comfortable with the fact that it was only the churches in the nineteenth century that had the structures and inclination to run local sports teams. Our support never had anything to do with the worst excesses of sectarianism. More generally, thankfully Manchester (and most UK cities) have moved on and the linkage was always very loose. I have recollections of cheering the halftime results when Rangers and Liverpool were winning but could not have explained why; it was just what you did and had become a habit.

Busby was deeply religious and a strong catholic and I know as a fact when he was manager he expected but never demanded his youth players to attend mass on a Sunday.

But as a catholic club maybe the myth was created with the white smoke appearing from the chimneys in Trafford Park with the appointment of Wilf Mcguiness as his successor ;-)

Probably the Rangers link is born from the prematch Rangers-Celtic chants on the Kippax same as the Tiswas- Swap Shop chants, simply banter between City fans.
Rangers and Swap Shop chants always appeared to be louder if I remember right!

But on the left right next to it there's green and white, dare I suggest for Celtic? Kind of nullifies the argument in its entirety.

That green shirt does not look like any Celtic shirt from the 1980s. City/Rangers and City/Celtic ski hats were on sale from street vendors around Maine Road but not from the souvenir shop. I think the souvenir shop also sold Rangers match programmes
