City fans' view towards the Champions League

Do you enjoy the Champions League?

I've thought a bit this week about the small-minded Likkle City fans who've always lurked, claiming not the care about the biggest club competition in the world. They are our "legacy" fans, stuck in an era where City defined themselves by the odd derby victory and hope of a cup final every decade or so.

Hopefully the quality, the excitement, the hype, the profile and the euphoria of this week's game has illustrated to these people how they need to heave themselves into the modern world of MCFC.

I'm going to use a wank phrase: "What's not to like"? This is as exciting as 1999, 2000, 2011 and 12.
I have never understood the I don’t care point of view, it’s the biggest club competition in the world. I am pretty sure the fans that they are not bothered really are bothered and by saying that they don’t care all these years ,they have painted themselves in to a corner of which they can’t get out off.

This is pretty much how I feel

Winning the Premier league (the most competitive) by playing 38 matches, every club home and away over a ten month period is still the ultimate achievement
But Winning a cup match vs a big foreign club is special

Do you seriously think that a competition involving last years’ National League winners including Liverpool, Celtic, Connah’s Quay Nomads, Linfield, Shamrock Rovers, Juventus, Bayern Munich, PSG, Real Madrid, Club Bruges, Ajax, etc. would generate that much interest?

The reason that the Champions League replaced was that the UEFA Cup was in danger of becoming more difficult to win. The fragmentation of countries in Eastern Europe has weakened many of the likes of Red Star, Partisan, Dynamo Zagreb, Dinamo Kiev, Slovan Bratislava, Sparta Prague, etc.

It would become a totally one-sided borefest until the quarter finals (with seeding) or something of a lottery (without seeding). Try selling that one to the TV companies!

People pandering to some supposed ‘golden age’ will not wash. The football landscape has changed so much since the 1970s that it would never work.

The stupid thing was to call the new entity the Champions League . Had it been called something else, the argument would not be happening.

You got my post wrong there , I was replying to lavanda past, about him saying he always wants City to win, but not bothered about City winning the CL .
I agree with everything you say there, about football changing etc

Hate the competition when we get knocked out. Love it now we are in the final.
I'm a fickle, hypocritical fucker like every other football supporter... :-)

Ha ha thars so true, many blues pre 2008 used to hate the premier league.
If I had a pound for everytime a City fan said it me pre 2008 "it's the premier league for me" I would struggle to pay for a pint of crap beer at the Etihad.
Now I would be able to afford s brewery and a mansion to go next to it.

Like many on here, I want City to win it for the owners for Pep and most of all for the players.. I’d be happy to win it this year and City never play in it again ... !

Many fans want to win it too , why do people keep missing the fans.
Like to see City winning it in the flesh. With covid rules and not going , these sort of games would be brilliant to go to
City will be in it most years now , like it or lump it .

Some proper clowns support our football club, fancy not being overjoyed to see City win the european cup, it is the most prestigious club cup competition in the world, i coukdn’t give a fuck if it’run by bent bastsrds most of the world is, all i know is i could only ever dream of winning it and now we’re one game away from potentially doing it, come on you fuckin blueboys!!

I only like the champs league because i get to watch more City games.

I don't enjoy them as much as domestic games due to the way they are reff'd. I'm not convinced there is a clear agenda against us, but i do feel there is some unconscious bias against us.

I think it just winds me up when every tackle we make is a yellow, and then have to sit and watch our players get hacked down with either nothing at given all or no card...

i think don't care really means not bothered either way. how can you be when its as bent as it is. of course fans want to win everything , if only to say "fuck you " , but to me the Premier league title is the big one . i get the club feel differently and that's fine. we are behind them and trust them .

Still have the league any day. In the early days of being in it we had zero chance of winning it. Just making up the numbers. The past three seasons has been different with a realistic chance of perhaps winning it. The whole thing has to many games. Perhaps only the top two teams going into would be better but we all know that will never happen. Give me any two/three of the domestic cups over it.

Is pretty much how I feel about it, especially as its UEFA's baby and the way they've treated us over the years puts my back up against it, but this year has felt different, as though I have accepted we need to win it to show how great this team is to others along with the fact we have a realistic chance and have put in some wonderful performances in these latter stages.

10 years ago I wanted the league above all things. Now all we miss on that front is back to back titles.

With the CL you have to seperate the competition and how difficult it is to win from the fact its UEFA and run by a bunch of cnuts. All football is run against the interests of fans to some level and if we didnt have this we might even have something worse.

It's a weird one, for years I was desperate to see us play in the CL but then when it finally happened I was underwhelmed. Winning the PL should always be the number 1 priority, anything else is a bonus. I want us to win any competition that we play in though regardless of perceived importance. If we won the CL I would be absolutely buzzing.

I love it and have always desperately wanted us to win it (after we won the league in 2012!)....you can see what it means to the club, manager, players, everyone....and also the money, spotlight, media, attention it gets you.

Not only that, but it unlocks other opportunities for new trophies to be won....the Super Cup, the Club World Cup. Who wouldn't want us to increase our collection of trophies we have never won before?!?

The only thing I don't like about it is when we play teams from England....just not the same feel to it at all....and makes it even more of a shame we are playing one in the final.

I'll cope with that if we win it though ;)

I know this has been discussed in various threads over the years, but I wondered whether views have changed towards the Champions League now that we've made the final?

Personally, I've always wanted City to win the Champions League. From being a kid and hearing the music, there was always something about it that made it feel special. Whilst UEFA did their best to kick us out, penalise us and hold us back from winning it, I still wanted to beat the bullies the best way possible and to see City lift the trophy and make our point.

I guess it's a slightly old fashioned romantic view I have for it, the same way I do for the FA Cup. I remember watching CL games on ITV with my Dad, regardless of who was playing and just feeling like it was a special competition (even as a kid before I knew what it even meant).

Every year I've watched City in the CL with my heart pounding and with a real disappointment when we've lost. Far more than in any other competition. The Lyon loss last year took me a long time to recover from!

We all know as a fanbase we've booed the anthem and lots couldn't give a toss about it and would rather win the league over it every season. But what I'm asking is, are City fans now on board with the competition or is it just the fact we've made the latter stages that people are showing more support?

I think this club needs to win the CL to be properly respected from outside, and I want to see us win it. I'd sacrifice the league next season (based on winning it this season) in order to win the CL if I was given that option. But I would guess I'm in the minority on that still?!

I'm with you. Would love to win it, have always loved the competition. I think I'm less invested this year without supporters in the ground and with the ESL bollocks, but even so, at the final whistle on Tuesday found myself at a loss.

The final is happening. That's already a dream come true. Winning it would be levels.

You misunderstood my post mate, I want City to win every single game they ever play in and I always have, I get the club the fans and players want to win it, just as I do, my point is I would not be bothered if we didn’t play in it again by choice, rather than by not qualifying. The premier league is he hardest trophy to win and for me, the most prestigious ..
City will always play in it and I want them to win every game they play in it, I just don’t care for the competition in its present format, run by hypocrites and bent bastards ....

Hope I’ve made myself clear, if not we will both get over it ...
