city fanzines....

Dave, going back to your question "Which fanzines supported Swales out / free the 30,000", I've had the following message from someone who knows what he's talking about.....

"The Fightback was the anti-lee fanzine at the time and the fans' protests played their part in setting the conditions for board members (David Makin) to go public in their wish to see Lee removed.

Also, a group of fans "did a Rooney" and were outside Lee's house in the early hours a few days before the Port Vale away game (lost 2-1) and were challeneged by Group four security, who patrolled the area."

He doesn't want to post and I promised I'd re-post his message.

I forgot about The Fightback...Dante Friend, wasn't it? He was heavily involved with FTM30K too. I know some of the other fanzines went public with anti-board messages - both Swales and Lee - too but I can't remember which ones.

I actually remember a KOTK cover titled "Dark Side of the Blue Moon" with the lyrics "Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way" which showed Swales clinging on to power but I think they stayed fairly neutral.

I can't remember about the others.

That was going to be my quote and I did indeed bottle it, in a packed Bridgewater Hall who could blame me?

Didsbury Dave, don't just flick through it, read the soddin thing.

haha. It's a really good book, mate. Only reason I say flicked through is that I haven't had time to read it all yet. Enjoyed your tale of losing your stash in the toilets when they were renovated when you went to court...or that might have been your mate.

Well done for getting it out there. Highly recommended to all blues.

Thanks for that. I can't believe that 'Wigout' failed to get a mention during the great fanzine debate. I think there were only ever two produced, but they certainly made me laugh!

I was at the "Ginger Group" meeting at the Lesser Free Trade Hall (1965?) - as in "ginger up" the Alexanders.... They took heed and appointed Mercer...

(Perhaps the second most famous event at the Lesser Free Trade Hall!)

& to think some of our posters think a Blue on Blue arguement is something new, after all, why did the CSA split from the OFC?
Because the OFC were happily towing the official line that some clubs didnt agree with.
Having bought many a zine over the years, on one occassion buying the same edition (I think it was CTIC) 3 times, once in Sportspages in the morning, then again at Maine Road and then again at the away game the following week :-), it was a great way to keep up to date on what had happened at the games I wasnt able to attend, & without wanting to antagonise anyone, I always found KotK as the most "factual" (i.e. it had more "heavy" and in depth articles), BTH a better light hearted read and CTIC as the best for lol moments, indeed I still have a lot of the old zines about the house and sill from time to time dig out a random copy to remind myself of where we were and where we are now.
I have also bought many non-City zines in Sportpages (now defunct) and Good Vibrations in Belfast, and even 10 years ago some of them were turning to a sort of "alternative glossy club mag" and losing the cutting edge that gave the zine movement its energy and voice.
I would love to see such a movement return the vibrancy to the terraces, as no matter how many sites and forums you look at, it is too easy to miss the real issues under the amount of dross.

certainly was a labour of love doing the fanzine but stopped after mam died, didnt have the heart to carry on but enjoyed the banter with Noel,Dave etc.City Chippy used to sell it and Sam Ellis was non too pleased when the headline said on the front cover-time to quit etc.Anyway here is front cover for Issue 5.I managed to do 9 in total.Hard work it was too.
