city fanzines....

Views expressed in thi fanzine are those of the contributors, and will no doubt be different to KNOWALL Baileys views, which he will no doubt spend pages and pages in his rag going on about it !!
I made the mistake of buying this once from Piccadilly Records in the days when it was still in Piccadilly. I hopped on the legend (101) and had read it before we'd even got to Harp Lager!

Why anyone who was barely semi-literate would want to advertise the fact to the world by publishing anything at all was always a source of wonder, but as its editor struggled to spell his own name correctly, it's hardly surprising that he couldn't spell mine either!
This is the reason I stopped buying fanzines, at the time it seemed to be all about getting one over the others with petty comments such as the one above. Pity because when they first started they were an exellent way to pass the time when returning from away games.

Personally, I think that if you're involved in publishing anything that you intend to sell to the public then you should do your level best to make sure that basic English language rules are adhered to as far as possible; you know, things like construction of sentences, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Perhaps - for reasons known only to yourself - you don't agree with this "petty" but basic philosophy. If this is the case, then more fool you.

I'll let you into a secret: several years ago the City Magazine - published by no less than the MUEN - was so riddled with spelling mistakes and typos that a member of the City board asked me to proof a previously published issue by way of an example and meet Peter Spencer at the MUEN's offices on Deansgate; there was also the vague notion to possibly proof future issues. Instead of looking at the typo-strewn edition I had brought with me in any kind of detail, Spencer decided to defend the indefensible. Given the evidence that I had in my hands this was quite laughable. While I accept that I may have made the odd error, typo etc. I told him that I'd put any of my issues against any of theirs in terms of error count. Needless to say, this wasn't taken up. I've no idea what the magazine looks like nowadays but at that time it was a damned disgrace.

The MUEN, on the other hand, is still riddled with so many juvenile mistakes and poor examples of PhotoShopping that I can only assume they are paying everyone who works there the minimum wage and they don't employ any professional proofreaders or designers any more.

As a little kid I used to read BTH and KOTK. Looking back I was quite a tragic little bastard but it excites me these days to know that Mr BTH and I are sparring partners and fellow Smiths/Morrissey enthusiasts.

Some of the piccies on the inside back cover in CTIC were superb. Remember the one where John O'Shea and a few of his chums were modelling the MANUre away kit!! Sorry ain't got the pic. Someone'll whip it on 'ere in the next five posts!
Funny you should mention that one. I found that particular issue while sorting out some stuff. Unfortunately I'm away all week so won't be able to scan it in until weekend. In fact I might even post a summary of the whole issue to remind us what life was like in the bad old days
And here it is;
