City matchday presenters sacked over podcast (P6)

Been coming for a long time with these 2 unfortunately. Personable and funny guys, but you just can't say some of the stuff they have been doing these days, especially in a public facing role. Shit storm brewing though as they were long term employees and big blues.

I don't particularly find it funny, definitely don’t think it’s offensive.

I'm not personally offended either. It is definitely lowest common denominator human though, and I can totally see why it'd offend others. They genuinely lack brain cells if they couldn't see how this would end.

But that's the thing - if you're not offended and I'm not offended and nobody in this thread is actually offended then who is offended? Are we defending the rights of a fictitious person not to be offended by ethnic humour?

That sounds a bit like blasphemy laws to me.

Not talking about their actions inside their cartoon world, but instead the wildly offensive Chinese stereotypes and accents that Seth McFarlane paid his voice actors to do
I can see why you're making this point but I'm not sure it's the best equivalent to draw up. Nobody's saying these two guys have to stop doing the podcast, they're free to do as they wish and people are free to listen to it/ignore it. I didn't even know it existed until yesterday. And if you head to their Stitcher page it says views expressed by the podcast are their own and not that of Manchester City. But while the podcast might not be associated with the club, they're still City employees, and that's why they've been sacked over this. Worse still for them, they're City employees doing casually crass and culturally insensitive impressions of Chinese people, in public, while being paid by a club 13% owned by Chinese investors. That's not a good look - not for the two guys, not for City. They also do casually crass and culturally insensitive impressions of Spanish/Latin folks during this first episode, which again is mostly harmless nonsense, but they're employed by a club whose manager and (most of the) backroom staff are Spanish. David Silva's just been named the club captain as well. I repeat, it's not a good look. They can carry on doing the podcast, and people can carry on listening to it if they fancy some 1970s-style risque humour with their football chat, but City don't have to carry on employing them.

As for Mah Mah Ling, she was a character created in 2007 and has appeared in just one episode since 2013. Twelve years is a long time for attitudes towards racial caricatures to change and I imagine that's probably why she was eventually sidelined six years ago. At the very least, Mah Mah Ling is voiced by Amy HIll, a Japanese-American voice actress. That's not exactly a defence of the character or the way she's written - it's still a problem when [x]-American actors are forced to fake the accent of their "homeland" - but her existence in the show is, if anything, a sign of how attitudes towards characters of her type have changed over the years. Look at the discussions around Diane Nguyen from BoJack Horseman - she's an American-Vietnamese woman voiced by a white American actress, Alison Brie. The creators have since responded to the criticism they received by saying they'd do things differently if they could start over again. And these podcast lads probably have to look at themselves in the mirror and ask whether their type of humour has simply become outdated and should go the way of Mah Mah Ling. As I've said, they can carry on doing the podcast, and people can carry on listening to it - I don't think anyone is suggesting that their podcast be shut down - but they can't expect to continue to be employed by City if they're going to essentially do insensitive, cartoonish impressions of people we're owned and managed by.

Tbf, I'm not the one pretending to be a comedian. If I was, I'd probably know that this would go down like a lead balloon ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Me too but I don't feel the need to tell people what they should or shouldn't find funny.
