City matchday presenters sacked over podcast (P6)

Well for one, i'm not Chinese, nor is anyone else in this thread most likely, so it doesn't really affect me. I've not asked any Chinese people, but I'd guess some wouldn't like the dated Chinese impressions mocking them. It's a fair presumption. City probably don't want to take that risk given their Chinese connections. I did however see some City fans I know who are genuinely annoyed by their 'lol gay' humour, and understandably so. It affects them personally. I can only imagine people using humour along the lines of that is particularly annoying, especially when it comes from people hired by the club.

I'm all for free speech and bad jokes. Genuinely. I fully prescribe with Gervais' view on this, but I also believe that free speech doesn't come with impunity just because it was a joke. Gervais said this himself too. People have a right to make jokes about anything, and others have a right to give them shit for it. If City want to sack someone for making jokes around Spanish, Chinese stereotypes, then that's their personal prerogative. I'd not sack someone for it without a warning, but given the club's stance on some things, well it was inevitable. It's fucking stupid of them to not foresee this so I can't really feel sorry for them. It's genuinely thick stuff.

That's a different issue and I generally agree.

If the idea is "the club sacked these people for acting like a pair of dicks" then that's fine. It's the "the club sacked these people because a person we've invented might be offended" that irks me.

And as I say, in my (pretty vast) experience of Chinese people they are incredibly hard to offend. And almost comically racist towards the Japanese*. This is Chinese people as in people from China rather than 3rd or 4th generation people obviously.

*And not in the the "haha Japanese people are weird sex perverts" way but more in the "haha we should genocide Japanese people" way.

That's alright then - give them their jobs back because some faceless internet man has met a few Chinese people in his time

At least he won't be tripping up little kids at the 5 a side games/penalty shoot comps ......I thought that was well funny.

More of Ferris will really piss me off

The idea that Asian people actually aren't offended by Asian stereotypes because you know some Chinese people who are not is patently absurd and I hope you realize that.

The idea that Chinese people are offended by Chinese stereotypes because you haven't met any who have is even more absurd.

It’s not acceptable. But it’s surely not a sackable offence?

They should be punished for their stupidity but sacked?

They’ve country/xenophobically stereotyped accents, it’s not like they’ve racially abused anybody.

I didn’t find it funny or acceptable though.

With the current climate (Sterling saga, the ongoing kick it out campaign in football and the shift is attitudes over generations), they made a rod for their own backs here. It doesn’t reflect well on a worldwide, professional organisation.

Bullshit mate. I’ve spent months in Asia, people from other countries all always imitating Asians, they actually find it funny. My mates Mrs is Thai, she’s always trying to imitate an English person, is it offensive? Only to soft twats who think it is.

Okay. On the flip side I’ve worked with numerous nationalities who have come to study in England. I can tell you, that the Chinese and Italians were pissed off and had plenty to say when rude pricks had the gall to shout stereotypical slurs in public at them, including imitating their accent.

At the end of the day, these two presenters failed to maintain a professional persona in a job that associates itself with an array of nationalities, and in today’s lowered tolerance of ignorance or stereotyping.
