Stadium Expansion
Manchester City have been given the green light to expand the capacity of the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City Council's planning and highways committee has approved plans to increase the capacity of the stadium, formerly known as the City of Manchester Stadium and opened for the Commonwealth Games, from 47,670 to 62,170.
The plans could create about 160 temporary construction jobs during both stages of the expansion. Once the work is complete up to 220 permanent match day jobs are set to be created – 110 for each phase.
This would include up to 40 stewards, 50 catering and hospitality staff, ten operations staff and ten roles in ticketing.
Insider revealed a planning application for the project was submitted in January.
In a report by planning officers prior to the meeting the scheme was recommended for approval.
The officers said the expansion of the stadium would "provide enhanced facilities which will help to create a stadium of national and international profile and improve the visitor experience".
The continued social, economic and physical growth and regeneration of East Manchester is a "key objective" of the city's core strategy, the officers added. The job creation aspect of the scheme was also welcomed.
