In no sport, ever, does a winning player/ team not lose form at one point. They may not lose, but they may not win either nor play to their best in every competition!! Do you sack them off cos they have a blip??
What we saw today had fuck all to do with losing form.
And at no point did I say we should sack anyone, although in fact we should.
My point was that we have some great players who can pretty much be relied upon every single time and who are the spine of our team. I am talking Hart, Kompany, Zabaleta, Silva, Aguero primarily. Then you add in some others who are real top quality - Fernandino, Negredo, Nasri. Perhaps add Navas and Kolarov too. You play a majority of these and you know what you are going to get. Quality and work ethic and almost certainly a result.
Then you have other players who are patently not as good, or who can be great but are a bit flaky. I won't name names, but the rest basically. Play one or two of those and that's fine, they slot in and support the main cast. But when you have too many b list players, we struggle. It's not the first time we have seen this, and that's why I say it's got nothing to do with form. It's about quality.
I am not suggesting we sack all of these, just that we don't play them all at the same time.
John McEnroe and Peter Flemming won everything in tennis doubles and Flemming was a donkey. But Mac didn't sack him. On the other hand, if two Flemmings had played together they would have got knocked out first round every time. Our supporting role players can do a great job in a supporting role. But not in the starring role, thanks.
