City v Wigan Post Match Thread (FA Cup)

Hearing the team it was obvious that defence would concede 1 or 2 goals, but you would have hoped / expected the rest of the team still to have created and finished enough chances to win the game

The defence lived up to expectations but the rest of the team were lethargic and unimaginitive and we have two forwards who are completely out of form and clearly unfit

Just got back, highlight of the day was seeing the new bridge over Ashton new road, that's it really... oh and MDM and Micha Richards should not start again ever !!!!

I must of watched a different game to everyone else.

Despite what BT were trying to force on everyone, I thought we controlled the game and more than deserved a win. Their penalty, yes it was a penalty but it was pretty soft really and that's all that happened in the first half. BT tried to point out that we had no shots in the first half, what they missed was that Wigan didn't have any either. I thought in the first half it was fairly equal in terms of CHANCES with the penalty making the difference but we were not that bad.

The second half goal for them was down to a total cockup by Clichy who went to sleep and it was just generally shite defending from Richards as well who should be doing more to stop the cross coming in. We made loads of chances after that and dominated the game, Wigan were hanging on for half an hour and it was like QPR without the goals, really poor performance offensively though apart from the last 10/15 minutes where I thought we'd at least bring it to 2-2 but well, when Dzeko had that shot which somehow didn't go on, you knew it just wasn't to be.

One thing that worries me a lot is Negredo seems to of completely lost his confidence, he was banging them in before the Chelsea match a while ago but now he just seems shot and doesn't look confident on the ball. Aguero came alive in the last 25 minutes but I don't know, he just doesn't seem fit or he has also lost confidence. Look at our performance against Spurs away and look at Aguero now and something is just amiss, I don't know what. Apart from that, Milner ran his socks off, Silva was sublime and Dzeko put in the most I've seen him put in for some time. Unfortunately it just wasn't enough but I don't think we got done tactically or in effort in anyway, the main thing was the ball sometimes just didn't land for us and that spark of quality wasn't there.

I think this is a blip, call it the warm up for Barcelona, half those players won't play on Wednesday including Demi so it will be a completely different game. If someone asked me if we can come from behind to progress past Barcelona to the Quarter finals of the Champions League at the expense of losing to Wigan in the FA Cup i would take it anyday.

Kompany wouldnt have conceded the penalty.Kompany and Lesscott are a decent pairing against lesser teams..Can the captain be expected to play at his best today /barca/hull -this is why we needed a quality CB in jan

all this "wigan deserved it" shit is bollocks,
they were hand the win by our clueless manager and a bent ref. when those two fell short they were lucky as fuck in defence.

Oh dear please tell me what the fuck pellegrini did wrong it was a strong team selection more than capable of beating wigan. Its not his fault that the players had thought we won before a ball was kicked its time the players take responsibility it wasn't pellers who give the penalty away and it wasn't pellers who was ball watching for the 2nd goal yes he picked them players but they should not be preforming like that only garcia and lescott are excused from the starting 11 today its te players fault not the manager's!

THE BAD NEWS

The team picked should have but did not beat Wigan.

Deep down I always had the feeling that our lack of class defenders would be our undoing at some stage of the season.....I am sure many others felt the same way. Unfortunately, we were not able to get the likes of Mangala in January which would have made a big difference.

THE GOOD NEWS

I absolutely believe that if we can get two or even three great defenders in the summer then we would finally have a really top top team.......and every team in Europe better watch out including the Madrids and Munichs of this world.

Of course, I am not giving up on this season as we still have so much to play for......but I just think that next season, with new additions to the team, will be THE year.

It's a big if though. We seem to fuck up every transfer window we get especially in the two areas where we desperately need players. CB and LB

for me today Highlighted two things
firstly the Manager got it very very wrong today his team selection was woeful

secondly the second string players a really not good enough MDM clichy lescott Ricards Garcia and Milner all of this lot for me could go and we could easily upgrade all of them for much better players and we will have to if we expect to keep improving as a team

Shit happens. Would I have picked Kompany, Zana and Fernan after 90 minutes midweek for their national teams? NO. Hindsight if always better.
Our squad is probably not good but whats the point of paying anyone other than 16 players if we are never to rest people !

Wigan din't play any tactical masterpiece, they had one chance and one penalty and another one right at the end.
Something positive was we managed to create chances against a team defending in the last 25 minutes.

Hull away is very important now, HAVE to win that to get back on track.

And here we have it, after 20 odd pages.....sense prevails. Good post.

Good post. That point about Zabba, FErdo and Vinny has probably been lost on all of us me included especially with Barca coming up. Still you would've thought Richards, Lescott and Clichy could at least handle Wigans frontline. I'd put money on Pellers was gambling on our front 4 getting us out of any trouble knowing we were weak at the back. It was gamble that didn't come off unfortunately. Oh well at least its now become clear who we need to get rid of and where our strengths lie.
