CL performance in context

The fact is not only have we been found out in Europe but so have all the other Premiership candidates.
Our clubs arent as good as they were whilst others have improved significantly.
Yes we could have had an easier group and yes we should and could have played better.
However in truth, we aint as good and the majority of teams that were left in the last eight.
We certainly need to progress next year for financial reasons if nothing else but its not the bee all and end all.
The trips are great and I would love to do better but getting back to being number one in England would be more important that winning the Champions league and we have to stop thinking the premiership is the best leaugue cos at the minute, it isnt.

It gives limited pleasure to see Dortmund & Real in the semi-final. With the financial backing we have and the quality of our squad we should have done better, particularly against Ajax.

Simply we were never good enough. It has to change and change soon.

We need more vision, pace and goal threat within the team.

Next season's group is likely to be as equally difficult as this one was. Our European ranking needs to improve and if we had played in the Europa League this would have helped.

Our domestic form is generally good and on track. Europe is the key for our way forward to becoming a true world class name. We are a long way behind Real, Barca, Bayern to name just 3, but we will continue to make progress with the financial and strategic backing of ADUG.

The OP doesn't stand alone either 90% of people commenting must still think we play in Div 2
Here's an analogy.

Put a Skoda from 1992 next to a Mondeo, Vectra and Audi from current day and what you have is a pile of shite amongst 3 fine machines.
Put a 2013 Skoda next to a Mondeo, Vectra and Audi from current day and what you have a 4 suberb cars.

OP thinks we're still a Skoda to be laughed at.

The brand has changed, we're no longer that shitty Skoda.

I didn't realise I thought that, thanks for letting me know.

Actually, I think we are a very classy outfit I am proud to support who can play some blinding football at times, and in the main can compete with the best teams out there. We didn't do it in the CL this year, but I'm not going to slit my wrists over it - the campaign was disappointing, but could well have been so much better if we'd held on in Madrid and not cocked it up vs Ajax.

If I need to have an opinion on anything else can you let me know what it is?

"But and "IF" don't really help much.. The reality is we have not learned nothing from last season in the Cl and it was a major disappointment that the team couldn't even get a win out of the 6 games.

All this talk about hard group and comparing other teams and their groups is just an simple and lousy excuse.
How about Dortmund, didn't they have a tough group by drawing City and Real as well or even Madrid thought they got a hard group ?? Dortmund finished last year last in their group and they sure did learn a lot from the last season in the Cl and adjusted well by winning this year group and so far are in the semis.

Another excuse is if we had this group or that group with the likes of Eastern European Teams we would have advanced. The team had the same problems while playing in the Europa League and looking at our Europa League results and who we lost to, i am not so convinced that we would have gotten out of the other groups so easily.

Let's hope we will learn from the mistakes over the last 2 years and that we will adjust the tactics/problems in the next Cl campaign.

Given all the shit we have had in the media, and all the shit talked on here about our poor CL performance, I think it is worth pointing out we happened to be a group which has provided 2 of the 4 semi-finalists. On that basis realistically our best hope was to get in the 'Thursday Night Channel 5' Cup and not to get into the CL knock-out phase wasn't such a disaster.

While I would have liked us to win the Europa for silverware, the easing of the fixture list has broadly (Everton excluded) coincided with our best form of the season and left us rested and ready for the FA semi.

Of course we could have done better especially vs Ajax, but its not anything to go into mourning or meltdown about and it could help deliver our 6th FA Cup and the 3rd major trophy of the Mancini era.

I don't think most people seriously expected us to qualify from that group , and it's certainly no surprise to me that both Madrid and Dortmund have done so well , but they would have expected us to have done BETTER in it ..... we were abysmal from start to finish , and it was the inability to even get the better of Ajax that was most worrying .

I think if City had played as well as you did in the league last season in Europe, you could have definitely contested that group.

It's not the fact that we "didn't qualify" or that we "haven't won it by now" that concerns people.

It's that we had 3 points, no wins and poor performances throughout.

We fell well short of expectations in the CL this year. No amount of perspective, argument manipulation or York away can change that.

I wonder how many CL managers are hoping they get drawn in City's group next season ???

That's the thing .....

it would take a real effort for City to do as badly again !
