Clattenburg (Update p59 - not selected next weekend)

The thing is, it would have been the easiest thing possible for Clattenburg to say after the game "naah, it wasn't monkey, it was muppet" (or whatever he says he really did say) and then just get on with life with a quick apology for offence caused by the misunderstanding. He has, however, presumably denied saying anything.

So you have the word of referee, two linesmen and fourth official against the word of two/three/four players. No criminal case there (unless someone picks up something absolutely damning on video footage) but enough cause for an FA action I guess.

Remember Clattenburg has previous for language inappropriate to a supposedly neutral arbiter of a sporting event, and for that matter in personal life.

Should be interesting.

I would be delighted to see him gone though. I hate referees who focus on individuals as much as actions in specific matches, and Clattenburg is one of them.

I'm not defending Clattenburg in the slightest here, but given what he's alleged to have said, wouldn't you think it would sound more plausible for him to have said "Shut up you muppet"? In a North East accent, amid all the noise, the word "Muppet" might have been misconstrued as "Monkey".

The phrase "Shut up you muppet" is also fairly common.
"Donkey" for "monkey" and even that is stretching it, but "muppet"? Nah mate, not having that.

Chelsea have been very clever over this, win or lose I doubt Clatty will ever ref them again..

sorry if there is a thread along the same lines as this but I dont know how this bloke can still earn a living of refereeing in the best league in the world, he is an utter joke of a man

Merseyside derby incident
Clattenburg came under heavy criticism following his controversial officiating of the local derby match between Everton and Liverpool on 20 October 2007 [22]. During the match, he made a number of poor decisions including declining Everton's appeals for a penalty in the third minute of added time, with the score at 1-2, when Jamie Carragher pulled down Everton's Joleon Lescott in the Liverpool six yard box.[23] [24]. He also seemed to have been influenced by Steven Gerrard in his decision to send of Tony Hibbert as he initially took the yellow card out to book the defender, however after an interaction, albeit a brief one, with Gerrard, Clattenburg changed his mind and sent off Hibbert. As a result of the match, he was suspended from officiating the following weekend's Premier League matches as a result and has never refereed an Everton game since.

He is best known for disallowing a goal by Pedro Mendes for Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford in 2005, which replays showed had clearly crossed the line, that will be the one that Roy Carroll had to dig out of the net, the one that was more over the line than Lampards against Germany during the WC.

Not only should he never of ref'd an Everton match again, I'd of gone as far as to say any match ever again.

Ive said in the other clattenberg forum.. Chelsea have basically guaranteed that he will never ref any more games for them..

clever clever chelsea.

Bearing in mind most of Chelsea's squad uses English as a second langauge.

Bearing in mind Clattenburg is from the northeast so his accent will make certain words sound slightly differently anyway.

Bearing in mind how much the words "monkey" and "Mikel" could sound very similar, especially with all the noise of a football match with 40k+ fans shouting and singing.

Bearing all those things in mind there's no possible way Clattenburg is found guilty of this. None at all. There's just far too much "doubt" for this to go much further.

Which is exactly the defense he will use. I just hope he quits because he's a twat.

Me too.

Whilst I think Clattenburg is corrupt and should never referee another football match again I simply don't believe he'd have been as monumentally stupid as he need to be in order to racial abuse Mikel. When players get so irate they need to lash out they can use insults that they shouldn't, a referee has the ultimate way of lashing out, the red card. If Mikel is in the refs face, saying things he shouldn't, doing things he shouldn;t, then surely Clattenburg would have sent him off rather than calling him a monkey? It just doesn't seem plausible to me.

You beat me to it.

There is no way he will get done, and quite rightly so if the 'evidence' I've read about is all they've got. Mikel himself heard nothing, but Ramires (who's English is patchy at best) thought he heard the word 'monkey' and consulted David Luiz (who didn't hear it either) for a translation. At that point they presumably agreed it was racist but said nothing at the time to Mikel, Clattenburg, any of the other officials or any of the Chelsea management/staff. No, they waited until full-time to become outraged by what they are apparently now so outraged by.

To say their case is flimsy is a huge understatement, and I think Chelsea showed a massive lack of professionalism and levelheadedness by steaming into this within just 2 hours of the final whistle.

Can't understand why the officials mics aren't recorded though; think how useful it would be for dealing with a whole range of issues, not just this particular one.

Might just be me, but I don't think they sound similar at all.

I remember knocking on a Geordies door once (true story this btw), when he answered all I heard was
Him "bad time, cortus ina rutas man"
Me "oh you having a domestic mate?"
Him "nah lad CORTUS INA RUTAS !"
me " EH?"

Took us a while but turns out he was actually saying 'coitus interuptus, man', 'nuff said'.

It's the first bit, monk and mik, especially in a geordie accent (which is a similar one to Clattenburgs).
