What has happened in his career prior to joining City is not an absolute guarantee that the same will happen here. That's not how it works with players or managers when they move club, there is always some element of risk that it won't work out as planned. I think the defending this season has been embarrassing so I could just as easily say to you, what have you seen this season to make you totally convinced the defending will be fine next season? The truth is neither of us know for sure and not being convinced is not any more controversial a position to take than being totally convinced. We all want Pep to succeed, he probably will but fuck all wrong with people questioning the way it will pan out on the basis of what they have seen this season.
Sometimes football is really logical.
I'd say City have the third best overall side in the league and strangely enough, I think we'll finish third.
What I've seen this season is that we have players in the defensive and defensive midfield positions who are several years past their best.
It's like Demichelis last season. There's nothing any manager or God could have done last season to make him better. He'd just gone, and the same is unfortunately true for a couple of others this season.
Barring us playing like United by playing defensive and sacrificing goals scored in favour of not conceding, there's not much we could really do to improve our defending with the current lot. On that basis, I'd much rather have watched City this season that the state of even United's 'good' performances this season, so I'm happy with the approach taken.
The fact that we kept a club record amount of consecutive clean sheets away from home his year, despite the lack of defensive quality also makes me think positively about just what sort of defensive record we could have when we actually have decent defenders to choose from.
For what it's worth, we've probably got the worse set of defenders in the top 6 and by some distance.
Stones seems to have come on a lot in the last 3 months or so though, which I'm obviously very happy about.
