Club Badge (merged)

not gonna get anything but 2 tone badges on the Nike away and 3rd kits, no matter what the badge looks like so the colours arent relevant from that perspective.

the only concern is the home kit .... hate the eagle, but it makes the badge stand out. some dont work on kits.

Great work. I'd take that design with any colour combination and any of the options of circles/bees/cross etc.

GeekinGav,

Thanks for the quick and smart reply!

Firstly, LOVE the vibrant colors in the badge, which is probably driven by the gold offset stripes against the red. EXCELLENT DESIGN that I would LOVE to see on the City kit!

I appreciate the examples above and I should have realized what you said. I think one of the things I like most about some of the training gear is the contrasting monochrome badge. In fact, the only stuff I buy from the City Store are the t shirts and jackets that have an embroidered crest because I hate the big ugly shield! A round badge would be significantly easier to stomach, even if it is stitched on, rather than embroidered!

BTW, where do you live? Isn't it only about 0500 in England!

Anyway, as others have said, I don't know what you do for a living, but I hope it is in CAD, or maybe just Industrial/Sportswear Design, because your kit and badge ideas are fantastic and certainly capture the zeitgeist of your audience here.

All the best,

ChicagoBlue

The current badge shows how we've progressed as a club and moved forward, we don't want to go back in time, we want to continue as a successful club.

I think the badge at the moment is good and is known by people around the world. So therefore if we changed it drastically then it wouldn't be as iconic. But I don't know why we have the 3 stars on the badge so we should get rid of them. I think the badge should stay like that though because if we changed it back to a round badge it wouldn't be known by new fans in Abu Dhabi or places like that . Maybe when we got in cup finals we could have an old club badge or have it on the 3rd kit (cup kit) or the away kit. No one would complain about it and it would add some of the history of the club into the present. But for now at least we shouldn't change the badge of the club or at least not change it drastically.

A quick question for Gary James if you're monitoring this thread:

I've submitted my views via the online questionnaire but still intend to attend one of your talks and look forward to it. The question is this: Does the feedback area at the stadium offer anything different to the online feedback, ergo, have I had my two penneth worth already? Cheers

I get why people are saying red/yellow on the inner shield for the CoA but you know how thick/shit the designers at Nike are, we'll end up having red/maroon/yellow on the home kit. I know we used to have maroon on the socks but I don't think that justifies any maroon in the badge at all.

Maroon doesn't make sense on the shield either because of the CoA being red - it'd just be weird, and we don't want red on the shield again, we've evolved since those early days into an identity of sky blue and white - we need to keep that in the badge as I don't think the CoA colour scheme works well for us.

The inclusion of the lancashire rose just makes the badge feel more us because we had that on the old badge so long and it makes the badge pop more/more striking - that is the only red I don't see an issue with as it's not the background colour scheme.

Totally agree

sorry mate, i wasnt trying belittle you post in anyway, just going off what we have with Nike (obviously wont always be with Nike) so was just trying to visualise to folks that the new badge has to work on everything!! kits, promo, merchandise, different colour schemes, print media, stadium media etc etc .. its not just a badge anymore, its a product/company/identity Logo.

and yeah ... its early ... down the road from The Etihad. havent slept for a while.

no, i'm not trained in art or design, or CAD or have any professional qualifications. All I am is a bloke who suffered a Stroke 10 years ago, at 28, and learnt how to use Photoshop everyday to put shapes put together to create images, to aid in my recovery after the Stroke. i cant draw, i can hold a pen but in my left only, but have a writing style of a toddler as i'm a natural right-hander it seems. Not much i can do now. That's why, whilst i appreciate the compliments and support, i'm just being realistic lol

i think this is the first stage. they have all season to finish the whole process ... so maybe there will be a second chance if they have a selection of badges to express opinions on, after Xmas say ... then they have another 5 months to review and design. dont think we'll see the final design until the end of the season to be fair, i'd be very surprised to see it before xmas!!

I think the cutoff will be the date that Nike need a badge so that they can start designing / producing next seasons kits. You're no doubt correct we won't see it until the end of the season but I bet a decision is made much earlier.

I was looking through some designs I'd saved to my tablet earlier in this thread and forgot about one in particular ( probably by @GeekinGav ! ) that's got the regular inner shield but it's circled with the eagle's wings which are more graphically represented, then it's circled with the Manchester city border.

To me it's the only badge that links the two previous badges and provides a continuity in our history looking modern and fresh at the same time.
I'd upload it but haven't got an account to host pics!
In a vote I think it would rate very highly.

frankly ... as long as we dont have a ship sat in just a puddle, i'm happy .... that bugs the hell out of me. should be the canal, a long bit body of water that it is "sailing" in ... not sat in a puddle.

I grew up with the Rose badge, and have a natural affinity to this one as a result. However, I'm edging towards retaining the current badge unchanged; eagle, stars and latin included, with an approved Council crest design for cup finals.

All our badges look traditional and contain meaningful attributes (except maybe the stars). I'm worried we'll go down the 'corporate image' route and end up with something soulless, that gets re-designed as each trend changes. The designs from GeekinGav are beautiful to look at, but over time they will lose impact and there'll be a desire to tweak them over and over again every ten years. If we are keeping much of the attributes, why change it anyway? City are a club for the people, and having a traditional badge suits us.

Here's my thought processes ...

EAGLE
The eagle was part of the first official Manchester City Council crest, although dropped soon after (http://www.manchester.gov.uk/info/4...anchester_city_council_crest_in_to_the_future). It represented the Aerospace industry of the area. The rags used it in a badge for the 1958 Cup final (http://www.threematchban.com/Articl...club-badges-from-arsenal-to-manchester-united) although theirs looks a bit WWII-ish overall.

If we have an approved council crest for Cup finals, we are upholding a tradition and having an eagle in our normal crest gives extra validity.

M.C.F.C. or Manchester City
Using a monogram on shirts has been traditional for many clubs and our 68 final shirt had this, so I don't have a problem with it. An alternative could possibly be to remove the latin and put Manchester City F.C. and replace M.C.F.C with 'est. 1894'.

The Rose
Not relevant any more and has been dropped, can't see why we should bring it back.

The Ship
This is a given, it must stay. If only because the rags have a hilarious version on theirs.

The stripes (or rivers)
No question, these look good as they are.

The STARS
No problem for me. The only issue is we should ensure our kit makers embroider the badge in four pieces like Umbro did and not using a cheap get around on a shield.

The badge is known around the world, an eagle is renowned for being a fierce fighter, there are no offensive attributes on it, we have been successful with it and it says where we are from and that the city is ours.

cheers .. but i havent actually done anything new, i've basically used the look of the traditional badges (there has been a few) and fused it with the modern outer band which i thuink we wont escape from that is the brand continuity now for the CFG clubs. I agree we need one badge now, one identity going forward and not change it again in 30 years, just finding that right one is the trick.

Absolutely stunning mate, really outstanding. From a design point of view I can't see how even Rafael Esquer could improve on that.

I totally agree with what you said earlier, that regarding colour scheme, people should see the badge on a sky blue shirt before making a judgement.

I know you're probably getting sick of people requesting this and that, but if you have time to put various different colour options of this design on the blue shirt I think it would be invaluable for city fans to make an informed decision.

I think the gold and maroon / red crest really pops off on a blue shirt, whereas a blue and white crest might get a bit lost.

My personal preference is one of your earlier colour schemes. White roundel with navy blue writing on it. Sky and navy blue trim around the edges. Gold and maroon / red shield with sky blue behind the ship.

Thanks for everything mate, I genuinely think you've played a big part in the club taking this step because so many blues love your designs so much.

I think that is my point, the current badge has all the relevant components. I don't think it is perfect by all means, for instance when it is reduced in size it loses a lot of impact and can look terrible, but the main aim is how it looks on the shirt and for me it works.

We need to be concerned if we are being forced down a corporate design, in my opinion, and I think we are.
