You’re spot on that everyone is free to do what they want but I think you’re comparing apples and oranges a bit there. We know that the Community Shield has traditionally been played on a Sunday for nigh on 30 years but to my knowledge we’ve never had to put up with as late as a 5.30pm kick-off in all the times we’ve played in it since 2011 (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong anyone). The kick-off time is the piss-take that has got people’s backs up more than the venue. If it was 3pm or even 4pm then I very much doubt that there would be much talk of a boycott.Nobody is letting anyone down. Everyone is free to go to whatever games they choose to or to choose not to. As far as I’m concerned nobody has explained why this community shield is different to the last one, or different to going to Athens on a Wednesday night for the UEFA version of the Community shield, why no statement or boycott for that or does that sound like a good trip we don’t want to miss out on.
As for the Super Cup, well that’s always midweek and always an 8pm kick-off UK time as far as I know. And good trip or not, far more would’ve been planning on going to the CS than the Super Cup so the stupidly unnecessary kick-off time of the CS affects far more fans.
Personally, I wasn’t planning on going to either anyway. I’m balls deep in costs following Wembley and Istanbul and with a busy summer of Ashes cricket and a couple of gigs to pay for rather than a summer of downtime, coupled with 2 away games at Burnley and Sheff Utd in the first few weeks of the season that I’m intending to go to, it’s not a boycott on my part. However, I’ll happily donate the cost of my match ticket to the MCFC Foodbanks.
