Conscription

My Finnish workmate told me this tale from his Grandfather, who was in both winter wars:

The Finns used to work in small groups and ambush the Russians. The Russins in Finland weren't the "elite" and the couldn't ski, so they went in single file through the snow. The Finns would lie in wait and shoot the third man in the line. Then ski off and set up a new ambush. Shoot the third man etc etc. It destroyed the Russia morale.

Can you explain then why this vast super power army (millions strong apparently) hasn't taken Kyev, had thousands fleeing in fear of being conscripted as soon as the invasion started, is fielding 1960s weaponry, using Lifers to fight and having to beg weapons from China and Korea?

1.) Russia hasn't used anywhere close to the number of troops they have.
2.) Perhaps Ukraine with their numbers over triple in size are doing a very good job, and not the walk over many predicted.
3.) They've asked for weapons (like many do in war) so they could continue their pointless invasion whilst allowing their industries to start making the level of weapons they require to continue (its all online if you decide to look)

Again a news headline today stating we face conscription should we go to war with Russia. I expect I am now too old but couldn't bear the thought of my lad beimg forced to fight and would probably do my best to somehow get him out of it. How would the rest of the population react if this actually happened? I don't expect the current population is anywhere near as compliant as previous generations who went through it.

Never gonna happen mate. We lack the cash and even a UK govt isn't mad enough to expect an army to fare well against an enemy when all we would have would be Lee-Enfield rifles from museums and the contents of the Bovington Tank Museum as armour.
