It didn't vanish into thin air; it vanished into sea water. Not sure if it's thin sea water (density 1020 kg/l), thick sea water (density 1029 kg/l) or just average sea water (density 1024.5 kg/l).
 
I fear this black box detector they've launched is the equivalent of walking into the Sahara with a metal detector looking for an earring......
 
We get so used to thinking of the global village it is beyond belief that a huge plane with 239 ppl on board can be so difficult to find

I think it's because we are a little bit arrogant in that regard. The sheer depth and scale of the oceans is huge.
