Corners

For me the lack of threatening from a corner is symptomatic of a pure lack of organisation... that can only come from the coaching staff. Exactly the same reason we are highly vulnerable from set pieces in and around our own area.

For me the evidence is pretty clear these are not heavily practiced in training. as there is no variation or now preplanned movement off the ball.

Very depressing indeed

What REALLY annoys is that in 2011/12 we were top of the pile at converting corners and in 2012/13 we were one of the top 3. We dropped to mid table in corner conversions last season but this season we're gash.

Perhaps it was all down to Lescott?

And MIcah

Do we have a number of how many corners it has been since we last scored? We have to be close to a record.

Have yaya take them. He's not that great in the air and if we lose it he isn't going to run back so make the most of his dead ball skill and have him ping them in.

Or campaign to the FA for the right to use "special teams" and bring back Rick Holden as our corner taker.

We are not exactly stunning at converting free kicks in the last third either.....
I think free kicks direct on goal are okay, Milners goal vs hull was good as a recentish example, though possession free kicks where we have to work the ball up, we've been nothing special as of late and tend to create very little.

From Sky's "How Man City can beat Barcelona" article.

There has long been a perception that Barcelona’s lack of height and physicality can be exposed in set-piece situations. Indeed, Thiago Silva’s late headed equaliser for AC Milan in a 2-2 draw in the Nou Camp in 2011 was even famously predicted in the commentary box by Carlo Ancelotti. The concern for Manchester City will be that their recent pedigree in this department needs to improve significantly if they are to punish their hosts.

Over 30 per cent of City’s Premier League goals came from set-pieces last season compared to just 17 per cent in the current campaign and corners have been a significant part of that downturn. Goals from corners are down from 10 to only two with City scoring from around one in 100 rather than one in 22 last season. It’s not merely a case of poor finishing either – the champions rank bottom of the Premier League in terms of their percentage of attempts from set-pieces.

That’s partly due to a change of personnel (Alvaro Negredo’s exit, for example) but it’s something they might look to address against Barcelona. Luis Enrique’s team have not conceded a single goal from outside the box in this season’s Champions League so penetrating the area is going to be crucial. Corners offer that opportunity but can City seize it?

The most annoying part is we have the personnel to be extremely threatening from set pieces. Not only have the goals dried up from corners but Yaya's seems to have lost his radar from free kicks.
