Coronavirus (2021) thread

Don't really understand the need for condescension, but you do you. I was suggesting that we done everything within our power to limit the chance of that mutation happening. Just like the pandemic didn't initially take hold in this country by "magic", there are steps we could have taken to limit the consequences.
Apologies if it came across as condescending, that wasn’t my intention. You’d just gone off on a tangent in reply to my original post by bringing politics into it, so was just answering, but was in a rush as off out.

I was just more being ideological that we are going to have plenty of these variants popping up around the world, regardless of anyone shutting borders, and that vaccination and getting ahead of the curve is our best way out.

Sat back at home now with oxygen tanks around the house, another great service provided by the NHS.

Spoke to my Dad this morning who was taken in last night, he seems to be doing a lot better so I’m hopeful he’ll be home tomorrow.

The respiratory ward has already called me twice this morning to check on my stats and to make sure everything is working properly. Can’t wait to get improved.

Stay safe all

Great news Blue. Put those feet up and rest. Loose Women is on soon, and if that isn't enough motivation to recover as fast as possible I don't know what is.

Dr Fauci saying reinfection is happening with the new variant , even with antibodies so if you have had covid earlier in the year get the vaccine if you are offered it

Wow today has turned intro a downer before noon.

Long term I am still pretty sure that the virus will mutate to more infective and less deadly as this is the most stable way to coexist with humans. Yes, it will try out many other options first as it reacts to the barrier the vaccines create for it, but nature settles into an eco system not chaos over the medium term.

That medium term - though - is not 12 months. It could be a decade. Or more. Especially as we missed our chance to eradicate this before most of us even knew it existed.

That is why stopping a global pandemic before it happens is critical. Once it goes global you can only seal yourself off and try to eradicate it locally and stay that way long term.

Probably very little we can do about it now except fight each one as it arrives and do what we are doing - catch it early and seal off Eyam style - everywhere it appears. It may come to that.

Long term we have to try to coax the virus into a version we can live with so it has no need to mutate away from it as we are not basically trying to kill off the old ones as they emerge.

This is increasingly starting to look like the Walking Dead - a TV virus that was great for a year and then got increasingly stale and annoying and in the end people just wanted it to go away please.

Hope this virus does not run as long as the fictional one or we will all be turned into slobbering herds of zombies out of sheer frustration.

You’re talking as if the vaccines won’t work and they won’t bring normality.

Can you please clarify?

its like pissing in the wind and its blowing back in your face, one day were on top of this the next is a kick in the bollox

I just don't buy into the theory that it was inevitable. Sorry mods for mixing politics with this thread but it really can't be helped on this occasion because the two things go hand in hand. Part of the reason for the Brexit vote was in order to 'take control of our own borders' yet we first heard about this strain before Christmas. Since then it's been far too little, too late. We're still an island at the end of the day so could have used that to our advantage, completely closed the borders and enforced the strictest of quarantine and isolation period for those who are returning to the UK from anywhere in the world.

I feel that if we could turn back clocks, we'd have done that in February 2020, yet when a new potential problem was discovered or at least made public in December 2020 we've still been slow to react and done so in a half measured manner.

Again, sorry for mixing politics here but it's impossible not to. I just don't see this strain being over here as something we couldn't avoid, we could if we tried.
It’s always been a tricky balancing act between a number of health, scientific, economic, social and political consideration.

Different times, different balance.

We can’t turn clocks back.

Your Brexit point is easily answered but I make a point of avoiding the vipers’ nest, aka political thread, and don’t want your post and mine to get moved.
