Higher efficacy in Oxford jab with three months between doses

A three-month gap between the two doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine results in higher vaccine efficacy than a six-week gap, a new study suggests.
The research indicates that with three months between the first and second dose there was an overall efficacy of 81%, compared to 55% for a six-week interval.
The first dose offered 76% protection in the three months between doses, according to the University of Oxford research published in The Lancet.

Excellent news along with the 90%+ efficacy with the Pfizer after 1 jab

Vaccine roll out could not be going better tbh

530, 801 pillar 1 & 2 tests - down 15, 551 from yesterday to find 30 fewer cases.

We really seem to have plateaued now.

Last three days of cases all 600 odd apart in the 12,000s.

Regional Scoreboard:

Despite the small fall in UK cases this was actually not a great day for the North West but especially for Greater Manchester. As much of the NW just flat.

However, almost the entire NW rise was in GM today and the GM % of the NW shot up from 43.4% to 48% in one day. This is the highest GM has been since it was put in the highest tier in the autumn.

We are talking modest numbers - up from 684 to 832 in GM - highest number in 8 days and a rise of 148

Out of a NW total that rose from 1575 by 157 to 1732.

Out in the lead as the highest region still.

Single days in testing mean little as they will go up and down but the way the NW numbers are stubbornly sticking is clear from the last 8 days which are:-

1758 - 1960 - 1813 - 1527 - 1735 - 1846 - 1575 - 1732

About as flat as they go.

So the question is where do we go from here, do we chug along with this half hearted lockdown, and then never lift the restrictions, or do we have proper lockdown and really go after this virus. or will the government just lift things regardless.

I think with the shear ammount of people going about their business day to day conpared to last spring there was always a chance that the ammount of sustained social interaction would lead to some sort of plateau in cases?

Greater Manchester Summary:

Manchester had its highest number in two weeks at 189 Up 61 and a big rise on this day last week too

Bolton also over 100 - at 103. and again a significant rise on last week,

So Weekly Pop Scores here both go up and they have mostly been stalled or falling recently.

Wigan's story is much the same up and up but just managed to stay sub 100 at 95.

The vast majority of the GM rise came from these three boroughs all up week to week too.

Tameside was also up to 85 and up week to week and still in some trouble.

Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford and Stockport had better days though none spectacular.

Bury down 2 to 77 and up big week to week. Stockport up 9 to 67 but down week to week. Oldham likewise up 9 to 62 but up week to week. Salford down 2 to 61 and down week to week and Rochdale up 5 to 52 but down week to week.

Once again only Trafford had a really good day - down to just 41 and down week to week and head and shoulders above every other borough in GM.

As I have said before in my reports Andy Burnham and co should be investigating what Trafford is doing right that the rest of GM is not as in an urban area there must be a reason for their clearly different trend right now.

In under a month they have taken over every single one of the records in Greater Manchester - including the lowest Pop Score across the entire pandemic that Stockport had held for many months.

Worth finding out how and why - is it no new variants? - better compliance? - no idea. But it would help to find out.

Well said Heald Place. I am getting a bit fed up of the attacks on Sturgeon on here. I ambivalent to her but she seems in the main to be doing a decent job in difficult circumstances. Professional reporting of what’s going on too. There is a whiff of English nationalism on this thread at times which stinks a bit and should maybe on the political thread instead.

haha! English nationalism When describing the Scottish nationalist party! You couldn’t make it up.
