At the same time - see edit above.

You would have hoped this is on purpose and sees some degree of cooperation.

Ah, thanks, hadn't twigged that.

I hope you're right and perhaps this is the start of a more cooperative approach between UK and our near neighbours (though to be fair, the EMA and the MHRA have been very consistent throughout).

I would guess three potential outcomes

(1) No problem, carry on
(2) Issue with section of population (eg females under 50) - restrict use
(3) Small issue, carry on but with advised monitoring and treatment regimen to minimise consequences.

I would guess (2), (3) or both. We will see. I do hope it's consistent - I think the uncertainty and inconsistency between countries is as damaging as the issue itself.

Joint press briefing at 3 PM from UK medical authorities and vaccine regulator in UK on the AZ situation.

Will be on TV and involve Prof Jonathan Van-Tam, Dr June Raine, Sir Munir Pirmohamed and Professor Wein Shen.

This will occur at the same time as the EU give a press conference on the vaccine - presumably on purpose!
Very worrying if the recommendation is to halt it.

I think restriction to under 55 or 50 but otherwise not is the most likely outcome as the balance of risk is quite clearly age dependent.

If we had other vaccine options it might be different but I doubt in the circumstances that anything else seems likely

This all stems from having competing vaccines. I do hope the lesson is learned so that ALL vaccines are in effect presented as THE Covid vaccine from here on and these decisions can then be made under the radar as I expect they usually are in other situations.

Create a panic against one label and it is going to impact confidence in them all to a degree.

Nobody wants that when the world needs vaccinating ASAP.

Trying a few avenues but your guess is as good as mine re the press conference.

Feel like I'd have heard something if the recommendation was complete stop.

England hospital deaths today UP by the way to 42 - from 31 last week:

I do not think this is a significant issue (indeed 5 are over a month old) and there was going to be catch up due to Easter. This is in effect the usual Tuesday and Wednesday catch up data probably combined.

Hopefully will settle tomorrow and at these low numbers we are going to hit a wall. They are not going to drop easily to zero or even single figures.

No single day in the past week added more than 6 deaths today.

42 England hospital deaths - 8 from North West - was 31 last week - with 31 and 8 NW last week.

Other regions:- 11 Midlands, 8 NE & Yorkshire, 7 East, 5 London, South West 2. South East 1

5 in Mid & South Essex the most at any trust.

Most in NW 3 at Pennine Acute. All others just 1.

Ages:- 20 - 39 (2), 40 - 59 (4), 60 - 79 (18), 80 PLUS (18)

Scotland data:

5 deaths - was 6 last week

289 cases - was 542 last week

1.5% positivity - was 2.1% last week

192 patients - down 4 on yesterday - was 237 last week

21 ventilated - same as yesterday and last week
